Isn't it hypocritical that there's so much talk of social justice and equity this year, but when it comes to the covid vaccines, we jump straight to the front of the line compared to other countries. 🙄

It’s pathetic that so many foreigners insult Americans and call us dumb on social media (e.g. early COVID containment mistakes). Yet, billions of people collectively around the world couldn’t develop an effective vaccine. Meanwhile, America independently developed 2 (Moderna & JnJ) and was essential to the scale up and manufacturing of the third (Pfizer-BioNTech). It’s kind of embarrassing that the rest of the world couldn’t develop an effective vaccine. When the British tried, it was a total flop (AZ), and the Russian & Chinese vaccines have mediocre efficacy data compared to the US vaccines.

likehelpfulfunny

The vast majority of countries in the world have neither the expertise nor the infrastructure to develop vaccines. It’s stupid to think every country would develop their own. That has never happened in the relatively brief history of mass-produced drugs (or most other products, frankly).

like

I think you are absolutely right, it is hypocrite not to give all the Astra-Zeneca vaccines kept in Ohio when those are not approved in the US. Also, everyone can be vaccinated already while in most of the developed world only 60+ are receiving it. I believe that something should be done to redistribute the wealth (in vaccines) to the whole world, starting with our neighbors and the Americas. Also, I must mention that the US is being generous by vaccinating all tourists that require a vaccine, being residents or not. That is something in favor of the US people solidarity.

Recent IconRecent

Nope. We invented and manufactured three vaccines so it can stay here in the US until we are covered

likesmartfunny

The US put more money into development of the vaccine than the WHOLE EU combined and we negotiated we would get it first as a result of it. The Wallstreet Journals"the journal" podcast covers this really well. The world is pay to play.

like

Because we pay the premium just like every other drug. We also paid hundreds of billions in taxes to subsidize development.

like

If you think people in Iowa don’t have freezers to store the mRNA vaccines, imagine what it’s like in, say...the vast majority of the developing world? It does no good to ship vaccines to Africa if they can’t store them and use them in time.

I think you’re a special kind of intelligence. Government exist to provide for their citizens. Period. Anything outside that is charity work.

This is absolutely the indisputable truth, and I say that as a foreigner

like

Not sure how these two compare...there’s never much talk about social justice on a global scale. In America it’s been focused within the country, because it’s so far behind on racial equity. We can compare that to the COVID rollout- and we see that the US and every other country hasn’t done the best job in vaccinating low income/minority populations.

likefunny

“In America it’s been focused with the country, because it’s so far behind on racial equity.” That’s a comparative statement between the US and other countries. The word ‘behind’ is used here as a preposition. That implies a comparison. So what is the US behind if not another country?

likesmart

America did what it needed to do so it doesn’t become like India right now. I’m an Indian living in America and I completely respect what both the administrations did in terms of the vaccine rollout. Being selfish for your own country is not a bad thing, you cannot look out for others if you aren’t in a good position yourself.

like

Sales force 1 - lol no I meant the trump and Biden admins

I’m an Indian and this is absurd. You realize that Americans were hit harder than any other country in the world prior to March? The reasons why it’s so widespread is another topic, but the point is Covid was burning through America rapidly. Of course the US is prioritizing their own

Idk a lot of other countries’ governments and citizens were laughing at us and refusing us aid when we had it bad I’m not saying it’s moral to not be exporting vaccines, but put the shoe on the other foot.

I love people who work for giant tech firms that do nothing but exploit other countries and violate human rights and still have the audacity to vocalize their opinions on social justice issues. You really get to pick and choose what matters eh?

I think people forget the army of human workers in third world countries who have to monitor and flag terribly graphic content of violence, mutilation, child abuse, etc. on consumer platforms. These workers don’t get paid enough to get therapy for the mental trauma they have to endure

I see. Equality only matters when you're part of the club as an American. 🙄

G1 there is a long philosophical history that acknowledges that your responsibility to other decrease as your relationship to them becomes more attenuated. Everyone, implicitly at least, knows that they provide more support and resources to their immediate family than their extended family, their extended family than their church or social community, their church or social community than their country, etc. None of that contravenes social justice. Seems like you are being willfully obtuse. We have more bonds of fellowship and mutual support with other citizens of the US and it is perfectly normal that we prioritize supporting them and they prioritize supporting us.

likesmart

We developed them. We manufactured them. We paid for them. They're ours. I'm all for distributing vaccines at some point in the future, but the idea that American taxpayers should foot the bill for something (i.e. Operation Warp Speed) and then get in line with everyone else is ridiculous.

like

Every country was in it for themselves with the vaccine. Countries that manufacture or ordered early get the vaccine. If vaccine distribution was controlled by a global governing body then I’d agree with you, but it’s not.

like

Good lord people spend too much time thinking about the US.

I hope you ship your vaccine to another country instead of taking it OP. It’s the right thing to do.

likesmart

We send so much money to other countries already. Must we also vaccinate them first?

D10, as an American living in the UK that’s inaccurate. Britain currently has their own supply issues and has been extending the gap between first and second vaccines to up to 12 weeks in order to get more “first jabs” out the door; we’re ~12 weeks past that decision and starting to see a supply shift (where 60-80% of vaccines are going towards second jabs), leaving much of the “not at risk” under 40 population unvaccinated until this summer. Meanwhile in the US, 18-25 year-olds in most states have already made an appointment or received their first round. “Better” is inherently subjective without defined criteria, although by most measures the US has surpassed the UK on vaccinations in the last 2 months.

like

Extremely hypocritical but hopefully we release them soon

As they say pre-flight, put on your oxygen mask first before helping others.

Talking about social justice globally will create confusions. For example, globally speaking whites are not the majority. Just adding up population of India, China, and Japan, that’s probably more Asians than whites altogether in the world.

like

Then promoting minority rights globally is essentially promoting whites’ rights. That’s the opposite of US’ majority-minority dynamics.

Gotta put your own mask on first...
