No offense but when was the last time you were at an upfront? TV is a big part of them but they aren’t really about everything live at all anymore. You won’t attend a single upfront where you don’t hear at least one of the following terms at least once: time shifted viewing, OTT, VOD, on demand, streaming network, Apple TV, Roku and so many more. None of these phrases are about live TV at all.
And talking about those things still warrants companies spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on events...how?
Don’t even get me started on the new fronts, which are even more absurd.
Do you need a hug? I get it’s an absurd of money spent every year but I’m not sure I see the point in brooding over things you have no control over. We have bigger issues in the industry than this and much bigger ones outside Adland . The Upfronts/Newfronts happen every year whether we like it or not. Why not use it as a reason to meet up and have a cocktail with old co-workers/friends? If you still adamantly oppose the expenditures, just don’t go. So much worry over stuff you can’t control only creates more stress.
And the prices continue to increase as ratings decline!
The real “supply" is eyeballs...and they are not there anymore. So if you’re saying supply as in just the number of commercials being sold, why would we pay more to reach fewer and fewer eyeballs?
When digital companies can afford private jets to take clients to the Super Bowl, things will change. Until then, enjoy the parties!
The reach of TV dwarfs all other forms of advertising. Until the other mediums can replicate that the upfronts will continue.
