Many who repatriate are lured by a vibrant startup scene in India that is drawing unprecedented capital from venture and private equity firms and is buoyed by an effervescent market for stocks. But they are also disenchanted with what they perceive as America’s bleak and hopeless immigration landscape, where the wait times for green cards are tortuously long, and the limits on launching startups for newcomers are highly restrictive.

Known fact? What fact? I’ve always used my birth name even tho no one could pronounce it right and never had issues with jobs (other than competitive nature). Please stop using this false victim mentality.
This happens. But not just names. You may make it past screening. But you will be judged on your looks by way of LinkedIn and anything else someone may be able to see online. It could be your physical attributes too. I don’t do this. I have seen it from other MDs and Partners.
About 5 years ago I was having problems getting an interview. I am a woman and have a hyphenated name, one of which sounds white. So I changed my name to include initials and just the white last name and in a day I got 5 calls— one from a place that had just rejected me too! All I did was change my name! When they called me they wanted to practically hire me on the spot! I definitely didn’t go with them, but it was an eye opening experience. Removing all indicators of my gender, ethnicity, and political leanings (hyphenated usually means feminist) ended a 3 month drought.
As a white person, I always mark the ethnicity section of the application as "decline to answer" because I'm worried that I won't get an interview for being white and they probably have an over abundance of white people who apply. My point is that I guess no matter what your race is, everyone worries about stuff like this during their job search
I'm curious how do you know c4 that you didn't get it because of the color of your skin?
You dont have to explain anything, many immigrants go by "American Names" and its fine. Use your real name on your I9 and background check, and your "go-by" name on your resume. May the odds be ever in your favor ✌🏽.
Yeah if you have an American name/nickname you go by, put that on your resume.. but don’t list a name you wouldn’t want to be called
I’m a firm believer that you should take peoples names off of resumes until you walk into the interview room. That would solve a lot of the problems. Call them candidate 1 candidate 37 etc.
It won’t fix everything because there will be biases and prejudices during the actual interview but at least the kid gets to the interview to begin with and gets a chance...
I’m dying. Do this and report back.
Yeah it’s the same as abbreviating your real name — nicknames aren’t on any formal government documentation. So why can thou simply change?
I wonder if this is shifting in some companies/colleges with diversity initiatives. “Ooh yes, one for the brochure!”
Lots of actors change their names from ethnic to not tactically across their career based on their image and position.
Sure consultants could do the same thing haha

Yes. As somebody from East Asia this is quite common. All my friends from school call me by my ethnic name, but I used a "white" name for my resume (and had my ethnic name in parantheses) and now everybody at work calls me this.
🤦🏻♀️
Unfortunately there’s not really a way around this, you’ll probably get punished for using a fake name and potentially blacklisted. I wish hiring processes didn’t include names to remove that bias
This is really interesting because listing your race as black or Hispanic is usually an advantage. So the best combo is black/Hispanic race and “white” name?
An...advantage...where is the data for this?
Happened to my brother after 9/11 - he modified/whitened his name and lo and behold, the interview calls started to roll in - even from the same companies that had originally overlooked him. It’s definitely a thing.
Probably more interviews these days... need to hit the diversity quotas..
Recent new hire used a fake first name and then had to have it changed once onboarded. When I met him I said hi X, and he said “oh that’s not my name I just used that for the interview”....for me I feel like when I mark “disabled veteran preference” I get less call backs. I’ve gotten more when saying “decline to answer”
Small sample size but since I put a white nickname on my resume about 3 wks ago I've gotten 2 interviews. Just saying
I often wonder about my white ethnic name. Many syllables and hard to pronounce. Also supposed to count against you. I have often thought that Banks would be a great last name, like in Father of the Bride haha
Yeah my first and last name are unique. So i often have to say it to the person. However, im not sure it ever hurt me with interviews. I really hope not.
legally change your name??? maybe

Yeah I’m gonna need some sources for this one.
Was there something about the idea of people being racist about names which struck you as implausible?
Coach
I agree with previous commenters- I’ve seen friends use ethnic names or Americanized names depending on the situation. You could also position the « fake » name as an abbreviated name or middle name. If you start the conversations with « Hi, my name is (fake name) and I go by (real name) » that’s a smooth way to transition.
Coach
Nickname? Middle name? Just say you find it's easier all around to go by your nickname in the beginning (easier to pronounce, shorter and easier to write or remember), but that you prefer to use your full/proper name.

I’ve seen people just use a first initial for their first name on their resume and job applications when applying but in the age of social media it would be pretty easy to figure out who you are, what you look like and what your real name is.
Also in the age of Taleo and Workday your resume is being parsed by a computer first. Not discounting any bias that may happen when it gets to a recruiter.
Have you tried soliciting referrals to jobs tag you’re really interested in? Good luck and happy to chat further. I’m a URM and woman. I haven’t had issues with my name but I can help you think through ways to get to the interview.
