1. I don’t think we’re trying to get away from labeling people. I think we’re doing the opposite. We’re celebrating differences by explicitly calling them out and giving people permission to be who they are. 2. Most of the time these type of questions don’t actually go to the recruiter or hiring manager, they’re just Used to collect applicant data.

likesmart

Can someone explain to me why I’m being asked my gender/sexual orientation/ethnicity etc when applying for jobs? I can do the job, you’ve got my cv. All you need. That’s what it means to not discriminate, just hire people who can do the job. Doesn’t matter who they are.

likesmart

Lol you serious? You’re literally saying to OP they’re wrong for asking the question without googling first or learning from your comment that was written with ‘only with tiniest of snark’. Anyway, thanks for the info.

Er, the list is for gender. The examples you gave are sexual preferences. Correct labels for transgender people helps them navigate life easier. That includes navigating the workplace by specifying their gender correctly. The binary options are still there, why not just click 'male'/'female' and move on? The rest don't apply to you so why get upset?

like

Hopefully.

People, this is applicant EEO data. Literally everywhere. You don’t have to answer and no one ever sees it.

I see, thanks for that (not from 🇺🇸)

Personally, I would rather my “differences” be met with indifference rather than “acceptance.” All of this effort meant to celebrate differences is creating a side show that is distracting people from what should ultimately matter — my abilities.

likesmart

I mean, I agree with ACD1 not wanting “acceptance” as that implies someone needs to accept us. But again? The data being collected here isn’t about “celebrating” differences it’s about trying to protect people from discrimination

This is something that the LGBTQ+ population at IPG agencies have been fighting for for reporting sake. LGBTQ+ are not currently counted towards diversity reporting and statistics but they are just as frequently denied jobs, promotions, and equal pay. If agencies are going to have diversity initiatives, they need to include all marginalized groups. Also, having the ability to self identify my gender and feel/be seen is tremendously important to me as a queer person. I’m out. I want to stay out. I want to be just as much of a recognized person as my cisgender counterparts and friends. Your original post comes off as tremendously condescending and mocking. The internet is a toneless void, and it’s easy to be misheard or misinterpreted, but like, fam, chill. You’re not being hurt by this option or representation. Choose your gender identity or “prefer not to answer and move on. Words and tone matter. A lot.

likesmart

Sorry, IT Manager 1, I’m confused. Many posts here claim that choosing one of the labels will not result in anyone seeing it. But your second paragraph presents it that it would be seen… possibly I misunderstood though.

Yikes. This ain’t it.

It’s funny that, no matter how many options they list out, Male still gets to go first.

likeupliftingfunny

It’s almost like there are more biological males than females on earth.

The question feels a little strange, because afaik people who are trans and who identify as binary would just answer man or woman for gender identity. If the company wants to ensure they are recruiting more SGM (“sex and gender minorities” — an umbrella that some use to include people who are women and/or trans and/or non-binary and/or LGBTQ), I am curious what other questions they are asking.

like

Yup.

I could be wrong but maybe OP isn’t American. Other countries are a bit behind culturally on this topic (I’m originally from abroad so I see how back home thinks). In any case the comments are informative and s/he/they 😛 recognize it!

likehelpful

Ah no worries we’ve all asked questions that made others jump! Good thing we’re anonymous lol. Well, as you’ve seen, cultural context matters. Some things that are unacceptable somewhere are acceptable elsewhere, and vice versa. I code switch depending on the country I’m in because context is everything! So yes, gender is a huge deal here. And less in other cultures. For example I come from a culture where the pronouns are gender neutral by default. So no one cares there. And I come from another culture (latin) where everything is gendered, like a table or a pen has a gender. Which has another cultural impact. Anyway, to be fair you didn’t exactly use neutral language for this question, hence people jumping :) “absolutely” “let’s” “what’s next” “gay”. Maybe a question like “I’m confused at why sharing gender info matters here. Can someone explain?” Would’ve had more empathetic responses. But, it would’ve been less fun/controversial I guess ;)

‘something else’ sounds a bit weird. Does it have an input field where you can write I am a Ferengi Female

As a Martian would you feel more comfortable with ‘other’ or ‘something else’?

I think instead of complaining you should be looking up the word “contrarian”

NB for this thread: Someone’s pronouns are their pronouns. period. There’s no need to really qualify them as “preferred” there because that implies that there’s another option.

likehelpful

Agree. Though will note from my above statement, plenty of people go by a binary male/female, in addition to they/them - hence my comment of “preferred” when given the option to select one.

Kind of aggravated with the example male leadership is setting right now with regard to parenting at CV. At least 5 men in leadership have had new babies in the last month and it seems like some have taken no time off or only the bare minimum. We have 12 weeks and should be encouraged to use it! If leadership isn’t taking advantage of their own policy, what does that say to the rest of the staff? In my perspective, this is likely further contributing to the gender disparity in CV leadership
