It’s amazing to realize that if Joe Biden can get Joe Manchin to act like a Democrat just a few times over the next couple years, Biden could be the single most transformative president (in a positive way) since FDR.

Clinton was pretty transformative in deregulating banks so we had a nice crash in 09 to shape the new century.

He should have

Joe Manchin's unwillingness to touch the fillibuster is just odd to me. I agree with not removing it, although I would be shocked if the R's don't toss it as soon as they are back in power, but I can't understand the opposition to taking it back to it's roots of being discussion oriented, hearing the concerns of the minority party, and requiring talking or at the very least being present on the floor.

Yes that weakens it, but only in the sense that it takes it from being on autopilot to requiring some engagement. For the senators we've elected, this does not seem unreasonable to me.

I agree that we shouldn't remove it but I do think we should revisit the rules for use based on the fact that it's being abused. In Joe Manchin's latest op ed he said he didn't want to weaken it at all. That's what I'm referring to, the unwillingness to consider any changes.

I think that there is room to consider changes like requiring the person filibustering to at least be present in the chamber if not requiring talking from the filibustering party? Or other changes like requiring 40 votes to prevent cloture vs 60 votes to have cloture and end debate?

Yes, that means republicans will be able to do more (but still not everything) when they are in office but honestly, if they have the majority shouldn't they be able to? I deeply disagree with most of their positions but maybe citizens need to understand the result of who they are sending to congress to represent them. Also, the filibuster in it's current form won't make it past the next Republican controlled senate, so Dems should get on the right side of this now and set new rules that still respect the minority but that limit abuse.

like

This is an unprecedented opportunity for Democrats to seize and ensure perpetual power. To do so they need to pass HR1 and use it to redraw Congress districts, make DC and PR states, regulate media, keep borders open and carve a quick path to citizenship, use racism and white supremacy accusations to suppress dissent, pack the Supreme Court, and continue to keep Corporate America close to the party’s agenda through a combination of rewards and the threat of subversion.

like

Here’s the thing, the only thing needed to ensure Ds stay in control in congress is easy access to voting and removal of gerrymandered districts, because they actually have policy agendas that the majority of the country agrees with versus the “low taxes on the rich & culture war” platform of the Rs

Joe Manchin is the most powerful man in America right now.

Han. Every D senator is equally powerful.

Deregulating banks? Please explain, so we can explain that you’re a bit off base.

If you agree that Clinton was equally responsible with the R sponsors of the legislation, then we are on the same page.

Manchin is a Republican asset

I think Joe Biden should (and I am sure he already is) start looking more and more ‘creatively’ into executive authority for all his policies, if needed. The US Congress is completely broken and dysfunctional and Republicans are completely unwilling to negotiate on absolutely any topic.
