It’s been 6 months since I’ve last had a cigarette. The process was pretty seem-less, with no cravings. However, this past has been especially difficult. My sister came to visit and she’s a smoker, she really needed a cigarette while driving, now since I caught whiff of the smoke, this past week has been my worst with cravings. Tips to cope, so far— I chew gum to help.

I quit drinking/drugs a decade ago and can count on one hand the number of times I actually had a real craving. I quit vaping in March sometimes it’s still a daily struggle with cravings, though things seem to get better with time. So I definitely feel you on how hard it’s been. I still keep reaching for a vape that isn’t there so I try to keep my hands busy. I personally use “bubble popper” stress toys which feel great in my hands. And I say the serenity prayer a LOT.

6 months is amazing. You’re doing great so just keep taking it one day at a time.

Took me years to get over the cravings especially when I drank. Just had to deal with it, gum is good. Feel a million times better than when I smoked.

A motivator statement to remember during craving , it was me only who won this in much worst situation then this, current is much smaller situation then earlier..
Rajiv Dixit told one excercise to do half anulom and vilom using single nostril i forgot which one search video and i believe excercise can help during craving times ....


You know, I had a friend tell me once that he hated being a smoker, but he sure did miss smoking. That hit home for me because I think about a cigarette most days. It's been more than 10 years, but my brain is still looking for a way to feel different. I know that drugs and alcohol are going to have some serious consequences in my life, but that a cigarette here and there may not. Those have long-term consequences, and for whatever reason, my brain just doesn't register those as real. Chapstick helped me a lot. Hard candy and gum help, but it's got to be something good. I need a spicy gum or a really good hard candy. I'm pretty sure jolly ranchers are more responsible for me quitting smoking than most other things. Surround yourself with other people who have quit! I found quitting tobacco much different than quitting alcohol. I could use my will power to help me not use tobacco like I would any other healthy habit.

With alcohol I can not rely on will power. I am an alcoholic as described in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, and am powerless over alcohol. If I believe my ego that I can control my drinking, I am very close to another blackout.


Tobacco is hard. I quit smoking, but dipped Copenhagen for a long time. Finally quit the Copenhagen.

Why did you quit? I quit Copenhagen because my gums were receding (surprised my front teeth is still intact), my lip got huge lumps in it, and I was likely fairly close to mouth cancer. That was enough motivation to me. I would get really clear on why you quit. That might be all the motivation you need.

B/c I don’t like anything having that much power over me. My building premises is smoke free, so I’d look for reasons to leave and then felt guilty when I’d return smelling like cigarettes because majority of this area is smoke free. Thus, I had to drive around to find somewhere where no one was, to smoke with my windows up. My hands would shake until I finally got my nicotine. Seemed like too much work and power over my psyche plus my hair was drying out and finally just because I made a promise to just stop. Which I did, I stopped one day but this week has been the worst with cravings.

Currently going to school for my cannabis certification but I rarely see any jobs that offer cannabis research. Just saying hi, love this bowl. 5.5 years sober; loving seeing other professionals living their best (and raw) human lives.


Been sober for 14 months. No urge to drink, but still feel pretty unsettled emotionally. Would AA help? How does it work? Do I just show up at a meeting ?


Just marked 5 years sober. Healthy. Happy again. No hangovers. Weight loss. Got off meds and high blood pressure to 110/70. Each year is easier and now I just have no desire to drink.


How do you start with a family member who knows they need help but don’t know where to start?


I have been alcohol free for 2 months but I use MMJ to focus. My dr prescribed MMJ because I don’t want pharma drugs like Adderall. Is there a place for me in AA or is it all (sobriety) or nothing?


Covid has been hard. March 2029- December 2020 I drank a lot to cope without realizing it. January- March I didn't realize I was depressed. March I came to terms with increase and ongoing suicidal ideation and needed help.

I went into a intensive outpatient program (IOP) which has been super helpful.

During the beginning of covid I drank every day and in a great deal. January it was a "dry" month which was hard the first week but overall great.

March 2021 realized I'm clinically depressed.


After 3 years, the therapist disclosed that she’s in the program. I had wondered often about the source of her knowledge of the steps. Still I would’ve preferred her to remain anonymous in this regard. Now I keep wondering about whether I’ll see her at a meeting and what her story is. So odd. So self centered of me.

Experienced what my therapist referred to as a mental relapse this week (risky/ impulsive behavior, quick to anger, feelings of fear/ anger lasting longer than normal). This ever happen to anyone? I didn’t drink but was acting like I use to.


I relapsed one week ago and feel awful about myself. I’m having trouble finding motivation and strength to get sober again now

How does your significant other handle your relapse? I’m 5 years sober overall but relapsed / slipped recently and my spouse isn’t speaking with me. I know alcoholism is hard on loved ones but I’ll do your spouse cut you off? How to deal with it?


Has anyone here ever had to have an intervention with a family member? Would you be willing to share the basics with me of how it went and the outcome? Really looking for advice.
