It’s crazy that millions of Americans are struggling to survive on minimum wage, while consultants are pulling $200k+ to make powerpoints

Folks making $200k, or even $400k, really aren't the problem (apart from annoying NIMBYs and upper class folks who don't want to fund schools in poor neighborhoods). This is increasingly an issue of the top .1%, not the top 1%. I really don't begrduge a lawyer/consultant who makes $400k on a W4. They are easily paying their fair share.

It's not that hard of a fix, just need to shut down legalized tax avoidance, reform patent law, outlaw offshore money account nonsense, and implement an estate tax that is utterly unavoidable. We'll still have billionaires, but at the rate we're going Bezos' anecestors 500 years from now will still be controlling society.

OW2 that's factually wrong. Look further down in the thread where McKinsey posted about the 170 Rockefeller heirs worth $11 billion despite doing nothing over the past 100 years except having smart investment managers.

The entire explosion of family offices is specifically to sidestep the 2.5 generation thing. If you turn your family money into an investment company, the money will last forever.

The only thing I can add is that I believe
1. People are the product of their choices.
2. We live in a capitalist society so everyone will be forced to keep up with the Jones. Regardless of your income
3. Everyone has agency to choose their life (definitely in America) . You can choose to buy the latest iPhone or choose to invest your money. Lack of knowledge is no longer the cop out answer (internet is literally in everyone's pocket)
4. Emotional response like raising the minimum wage does not tackle real issues within America. Additional training in real life skills like personal finance and personal health will!

Yooo I grew up in a trailer park - most poor people deserve it. Plenty of people I grew up w make 40k and live just peachy - even have iPhones. Most of this minimum wage talk is a play for populists to gain power. System works just fine.

I feel our entire economic system is broken. Essential workers barely get paid anything, while bloated corporate bureaucrats rake in tons of money for superfluous jobs.

OP, a strong central authority is undeniably responsible for every human atrocity in recorded history.

what's the purpose of the post OP? I mean it sounds a little arrogant to post this when you're probably pulling in more than most other consultants?

Are you doing something about it?

A1 - so narrative that republicans are for big corp, tax break for the wealthg. The democrats are for the middle class, minimum wage. This narrative is false. All politicians are for the rich and 1%?

I grew up in a household where my parents work 80 hours a week to support us on minimum wage. I’m a first generation American. Grandparents were peasants back in their country. I didn’t grow up with sh*t. Now, I have to pay back my parents for their hard work and I’m not even anywhere close nor will be making $200k.

No MBA here and once I hit senior manager and was selling and delivering, revenue was ultimately king.

I was also able to do M&A and traditional strategy/management. We generally sell experience and expertise before pedigree.

Now in Tech, an MBA absolutely isn’t necessary.

I also make excel workbooks thank you very much

I mean yeah not all consultants. But I have seen people/teams only doing decks and used to wonder what’s the point.
I personally think we need to get out of this “deck” culture.

Yesss I am an emotional support consultant, I get to sit on planes

Hey we work hard. While I agree that the wealth distribution is skewed, there are billionaires who have way more than needed. Why focus on 200k, why not ask Jeff to donate 1% of his wealth

Well, I said what I said. So guess I’m a hypocrite.

If you really think the value of what we do is making PowerPoints, I think you might be in the wrong profession.

The answer is $15 wages paid using a $5 mcchicken and a $15 chipotle bowl. If you’re not ok with that, you aren’t just a ‘cog in the system’, you are part of the problem.

Ps, I laughed at this far harder than I should have, it's been a long week...

Bruh...my hours are terrible and am not rich enough OR poor enough to get any tax breaks or take advantage of tax loopholes.

I don’t think people working to make 200k are the problem.

If you think you’re getting paid 200k just to make decks then 1) you probably aren’t good at your job or 2) not providing any value to fortune 500 clients and 3) will get laid off sooner rather than later! I do a lot more than just make slides. The slides themselves are an output to your work, not the work itself. CxOs are not idiots to pay us millions to make useless powerpoints.

I disagree with that assessment. My client counterparts have been universally very smart.

Almost all of them (80-90%) have PhDs or MDs and deep expertise in their area. The value add of a consulting firm, in my experience, is being able to facilitate cross-functional communication and dissemination of knowledge.

Our clients are very large and their operating model results in silos, which leads to efficiency in service line functioning, but hinders collaborative and cross functional insights.

I mean be honest: We’re not doing complicated work. Anybody can build an excel model and put a story line together. We have fresh grads right out of college capable of doing that.

I get paid 259k and i feel underpaid - associate

It’s clearly a joke. Why are you all so dumb?

I don’t think it’s crazy that I make what I make. I do think it’s crazy we can’t raise minimum wage.
