Let’s not act holier than thou. We need to appeal to the target markets and if they want puns, we best deliver. I’m in advertising and I smile every time I see a good pun no matter the brand. Making people feel good can go further than the artistic lofty concept, as much as we like to produce them.
Not the point of my post. Just talking about the disconnect between what we teach the youth and what becomes a Super Bowl Ad.
There’s also a giant middle ground between not being pretentious and using puns as the creative device.
While a pun itself is not a concept, it can be the organizing logic that sets up a fun concept. Ive done a lot of spots based around wordplay. And I regret nothing! (Marco Polo, Ice T, Bulldogs) - ken

Those are less puns and more portmanteau
Puns are ok when you can execute brilliantly around them. In most junior books they just sit there lifelessly.
