I always try to start conversations but people still believe they for some reason shouldn’t.
If you’re in New York, it’s illegal for employers to prevent you from discussing your salary with other employees.
uhhhh CD2 it’s illegal to prohibit your employees from discussing salaries. i thought everyone knew this?

Really grateful for the salaries bowl on here as well as Glassdoor, but I agree it should be more common in the workplace. My manager keeps putting off raise/review talks with me and so I just stopped asking, thinking maybe I was already getting paid more than they could afford and I should be grateful... Then one of my coworkers left, I asked him and found out he was making over $40k more than me 🙃
How would anyone win with knowing the salary of peers? If you find out you make the same as your peer, everytime you are working more than them you will be bitter. And if you make less than your peers, well we know how that goes. Definitely go for more money but do it on your own merit. I almost always give raises when people show me why they are deserving and their plans for their next title. Some bosses don’t look out for their teams, though, so be proactive and unapologetic
President 1 while it is good that you offer raises based on merit and performance, many holding companies do not do the same unfortunately.
The only ones who benefit from employees not discussing salaries is the company. If the gap is more than what can be attributed to experience and performance, then that is something the employee should be able to have a discussion about to get them closer to their acceptable rate. Plus it helps employees get a better understanding of what their market rate should be so they can be more informed when negotiating salaries in the first place.
