It’s illegal and immoral to make employees work over 40 hours a week

Factory workers revolted over working conditions, pay, hours... eventually change was made. At some point I think knowledge workers- the new economy- will revolt as well. Current society pretty much depends on the income of 2 parents for a family to survive... it’s not sustainable, particularly when both parents work 50+ hours. I think/ hope the last year was a wake up call for employees/ companies alike. Flexibility & less hours overall is key to a productive and happy workforce.

No I don’t make $180-thanks. And again, I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT MYSELF today. I did spend 5 years as a regular person working in a preschool do I do have some perspective here, but I can also do math and realize how far (or not) $65k goes.

This thread is quite interesting. Illegal and immoral feels unreasonable - ignores the agency we all have to understand what line of work you get yourself into. It seems some expect a certain lifestyle. If you have kids and have the talents/credentials you do working at a consulting firm, you could move to the suburbs and take a less prestigious job that still pays decent.

Imagine a doctor leaving patient halfway in operation theater because his/her 40 works hours are over or a cop letting the crime happen because his/her 40 hours are over.

SA1: if you mean the endless production of slides using two-point fonts, sure. However, if you consider cyber defense — we’ve been a de facto war with China and Russian operatives for more than a decade. There’s no way you can do this job properly working just 40 hours per week.

Nice try, analyst.

Go work in local government then for 40k a year. You want to make six figures in your mid-20s? Suck it up.

likefunny

I work less hard in consulting than I did at the local government level. Trust me.

Move to Europe where 40 hr work weeks are normal and people actually enjoy life and the present

US strategy consultant in DE right now. Pay in some grades is similar in entry levels, but much less once you move past SA1. Taxes are astronomically higher. Hours are the same as in the US (sometimes worse) but weekends, holidays, and vacations are actually protected. The EU lifestyle is much better though. Much less materialism. Society as a whole is more connected to nature, enjoys the simple things in life, significantly more intelligent (availability of higher education), and prioritizes experiencing life over winning a rat race (for the most part)

Pwc2, exactly. I am living way below my means in order to: 1) save 2) not be a slave to a paycheck 3) I knew I wanted more life balance once the kids got to a certain age. My pay cut combined with my wife wanting to re-enter the workforce has provided so many options.

Illegal? No Immoral? Meh Will it change? No - US perspective, where you live to work

A somewhat arbitrary construct Henry Ford implemented for factory workers in the 1920’s is still ingrained in our mindset 100 years later

Call me old fashioned but I like to ring-fence work, rest, and relaxation

Babes, sugar, doll. I taught middle school in an underserved district out of college and worked far longer hours. For literally 25% of what I make now. Plenty of people on the poverty line work far longer hours than us for less reward and in much more stressful circumstances. Yeah, long consulting hours suck. And don’t forget to mind your perspective when making claims like this.

There are ambitious people willing to work much more than that. There are jobs that require working more than that. When these two match, people work. If you’re not willing to do it, find another job or try to negotiate with your bosses. But it is not illegal nor immoral.

How is it illegal? Or immoral?

I make about 250K total annually so I would say I’m doing fine. I’m also hardly convinced hours logged directly equates to productivity. Anyone can spin their wheels for 70 hours a week - I drive outcomes through focus and discipline with effective time management for around 45-50 and encourage my teams to do the same.

Thanks for the laugh

I can understand feeling like working over 40 hours a week is “wrong”, but it is certainly not “illegal”. That word actually has a commonly agreed upon definition that you aren’t allowed to just ignore and still be taken seriously...
