Got’em!
Factory workers revolted over working conditions, pay, hours... eventually change was made. At some point I think knowledge workers- the new economy- will revolt as well. Current society pretty much depends on the income of 2 parents for a family to survive... it’s not sustainable, particularly when both parents work 50+ hours.
I think/ hope the last year was a wake up call for employees/ companies alike. Flexibility & less hours overall is key to a productive and happy workforce.
No I don’t make $180-thanks.
And again, I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT MYSELF today. I did spend 5 years as a regular person working in a preschool do I do have some perspective here, but I can also do math and realize how far (or not) $65k goes.
No one is making you do anything. You can quit literally whenever you want. Show me where in your contract does it say this is a 40 hour a week job??
You don’t have to do anything in life but die.
Maybe make better career choices?
OP, if your point is about the overwork, I think you’ll find more receptivity.
In terms of having you work over 40 being illegal, if you are non-exempt (hourly), you get overtime for hours over 40. If you are exempt (salaried), those hours are sweat equity.
There was a report released by WHO that shows the link between long hours and heart disease, so these crazy schedules are killing us.
Is that immoral? Possibly. To change that, you’d have to change pay classifications and remove exempt work status. If the amount of work that needs to be done is held constant, this would increase the number of jobs, but deflate worker pay. All things being equal, we would struggle to find enough people to fill all the “free” work workers provide as sweat equity.
Think what you may want to start thinking about are labor laws and what change might look like there.

In Europe, perhaps.
Eh For me it’s 60 hours where I start to draw the line. But I feel that. Everyone’s threshold is different
It’s Saturday Sunday for me. I’ll work 7-11 m-th but Saturday has to be off limits.
Blah, 40 hour ww was a failed Gov program by FDR to stop employees from being greedy and not sharing opportunities with others. It was a failure from day one, employers simply lowered pay to make room for overtime and continued largely with their current labor force.

Not illegal, not immoral, but otherwise 💯

OP- what country are you in? It’s not illegal in the US. It’s also not ‘immoral’. Working extensively os certainly unhealthy and not good mentally so I agree on that
Worked on quick international assignment w SM and A level from Mexico and they worked 30hrs a week and took 5 cig breaks per day

Where can i apply?
You are in the wrong business my friend.
Stop
I have a pretty decent work life balance in the US
Couldn’t we just suck it up for 2 years for the brand name on resume then exit? People said 1 yr in consulting is worth 2-3 in industry for a reason 🤣 we basically work 2-3 times as much
What is consulting?

The last thing I'd want in life is a clock in at 9 clock out at 5 job. I've been there and they're demoralizing and suck. I get so much more satisfaction and life flexibility in consulting.
So you think this can change? Even citizens work these days forget people on visas
If you were French or of some other European lineage, you would then say working for than 35 hours is illegal and....
Small business owners. That’s all

This thread is quite interesting.
Illegal and immoral feels unreasonable - ignores the agency we all have to understand what line of work you get yourself into.
It seems some expect a certain lifestyle.
If you have kids and have the talents/credentials you do working at a consulting firm, you could move to the suburbs and take a less prestigious job that still pays decent.
