It's not about remembering history. It's about what we, as a collective society, decide to revere.

Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, was a vicious racist who advocated abortion and forced sterilization for black people and mentally handicapped people. She is memorialized with statues and plaques. I think they need to come down and Planned Parenthood needs to be pilloried in the public square until it recants is past and disavows it's founder.

Washington monument needs to go, he owned slaves. I just can't be a part of that....silence is acceptance and glorification of slavery ....march now, check your priveledge whitey

Why do people get so damn defensive about statues commemorating traitors that were put up to intimidate minorities?

I think history is important. We need context and visibility into what lead us into what we are dealing with at this point in time. Without history how do you know if you are revering something that should be revered?

If you're applying modern day morality to historical figures, most will fail the "are you worthy of being revered" test. Maybe Jesus?

Sanger was a proponent of negative eugenics, which aimed to improve human hereditary traits through social intervention by reducing the reproduction of those who were considered unfit.

Yep, D, Sanger was a pretty nasty piece of work. Woodrow Wilson was more than a little implicated in the whole eugenics movement as well, so his statues are going to have to come down also. Yale is going to be renamed New Haven College because Yale was a Slave owner.

@K1 I totally agree. But shouldn't that mean that every once in a while we should take a step back and assess whether our modern day morality is truly aligned with whom we're revering through statuary?

Also, I think context is important too. I don't know the context behind the Sanger statue, but MANY of the modern confederate statues were put in place in the early 1900s following Jim Crow laws - literally to intimidate and terrorize blacks. That not my morality and I think it's time we reassess.

Just about finished completing my sustainability science masters (physics undergrad) and have my PMP cert.
