It’s so anticlimactic when a case gets resolved on the eve of trial. On one hand, I’m obviously happy for my client. On the other hand, I’m really disappointed that I don’t get to try the case. It’s a weird feeling when you’re geared up for a 2-3 week battle and then all of the sudden it doesn’t happen. On to the next one…

Sometimes dealing with judges in Cook County feels like being back in school and dealing with bullies. I’ve grown a tough skin and a mouth that respectfully calls it out (when possible). I know it’s part of the deal. But, I’m so tired of it!

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.

I’m a defense attorney who has been developing a PI practice on the side. I have a case where the at-fault driver is insured by State Farm. I’ve been told to “be careful” with State Farm bc they’re very difficult to work with. Is this true, and any advice on dealing with them to hopefully reach a settlement?
