15 months old and first bad cold??? You’ve been doing something very right.
My boy is a year we just had a nasty respiratory ordeal in nov. As long as it’s not in the chest, and their breath isn’t shallow and labored it’s going to be ok. Monitor for fever , tell the sitter to be extra attentive to text more with updates if anything is off.
We have saline drop gif the nose, add a couple in one nostril- lay her back for a few, then try to suction any thing out and repeat on the other .
Saline helps break up the nose mucus.
We also have a nebulizer, with saline treatment here and that’s a great thing to have on hand to help with that congestion. Ask your pediatrician to see if it might be something that you could use during times like this.
We’ve had a horrible season with flu and 5 kids. Awful. The doctor told us to watch out for RSV and breathing issues while having th flu.
RSV can be transferred my touching surfaces. We decided not to send them back to school for another 2 weeks.
Our family have made a commitment that the health of our kids come first.
If you are getting the mommy vibes, LISTEN.
The job will be there when you return. I promise you.
Good luck 🍀

In my experience breathing issues are best seen in the abdomen. If the abdomen is sucking in aggressively and rapidly it indicates a breathing issue and medical attention is needed asap.
Yes- these are called retractions and mean you need to go to the ER. You can YouTube for videos of what they look like.
Trust your gut. If you feel like something is off, go to urgent care/ER if you can’t see your pediatrician. We took our 15 month old to the ER on Saturday because it looked like she was working harder than normal to breathe, and ended up getting admitted; spending 4 days in the hospital!
Doc appointment? Having and Following their advice usually makes me feel able to let go. I know RSV is surging. Having the nanny load up on healthful stuff like soup broth, vitamins, tea, steam, like having them run a hot shower and sit in the room, sleep. Checking in throughout the day to ease the mom guilt!

Try doing steam showers, too. And honey is a great natural couch syrup. Lots of liquids- whatever she is happy to drink!
Any retractions: straight to the ER. Google/YouTube for what retractions look like.
Saline, don’t over suction their nose it can do more harm then good, humidifier, pat back throughout day to help break it up, keep hydration up with pedialyte, call the doc for advice too.
We got a portable nebulizer for saline which helps too.
But obviously suction if it’s productive. It’s an awful sick season. Hang in there , check in throughout the day.z
Is she having trouble breathing? Look up videos of retractions and if she has them, call the pediatrician. If not, you can wait until after work to bring her to a clinic if you still think it’s bad. Ask the nanny to offer lots of by seating fluids and run a humidifier by her crib.

Only suction if they’re having trouble breathing, eating or sleeping, otherwise it’ll cause a lot of inflammation. Humidifier. I find vicks (or a more natural alternative) helps me a lot. Eucalyptus oil in a diffuser but look up “dosage” because littles are sensitive to some oils. Nebulous saline. But if she seems to not be that miserable, you can kind of just let it run it’s course.
I don’t think any “medical doctors” would recommend essential oils at all or have any education in them. An aromatherapist would be the appropriate expert resource for using essential oils for therapeutic benefit. I agree both with BCG’s thought that anecdotal “nothing bad ever happened to my kid” isn’t very helpful, and also with AA1 when you said that you can google and find any answer you want. Do you, I’m just bringing light to the fact that some experts in the field find eucalyptus (and peppermint and rosemary) to be unsafe for small children. If you choose to interpret that differently, it’s your choice.
If you can’t get a doctors appointment right away head to an urgent care - I live in atlanta and love that they have Children’s Urgent care. Hope she feels better soon
Take her to doctor and see if a nebulizer would help. We got one with my then-baby’s first bad cold, and we used it constantly that first winter. It helped a lot
Thanks all. She doesn’t seem that miserable and is acting fairly normal but I get PARANOID about breathing. Has anyone had luck with the potato slices on the feet? We’re using saline drops for her nose (and the Frida snot sucker) as well as a humidifier but she’s too young for cold and cough meds…
The potato slices are not real. It’s social media woo.
Hang in there, Mom! Sniffles and coughs sound rough when they come out of our little ones, but remember, it’s totally normal when they’re sick.
Call your nurse. Have the nanny take her in if necessary.
Zarbees chest rub helps my kids with breathing/chest congestion. Available at Target etc. 😉
Trust your gut, mama.
Our 18 month old had cold symptoms for a while and then we noticed the retractions on her belly and chest area. We happened to have a pulse oxymeter and used that to see that her blood oxygen was 83 when it should be 95-100. Took her to see a doctor and was admitted to hospital right away. We we're there for 8 days because she also had pneumonia!
Forgot to say it was RSV!
Humidifier at night + Vicks on the bottom of their feet with socks at bedtime 👌
