it’s wild how much casual racism there is in the HBS threads. maybe the reason you didn’t get in despite your top stats is that your essay pointed to the same type of low EQ that goes with complaining about how unfair it is.

It’s funny that Overrepresented minorities are only mad about black and Latinos When black and Latinos are not even the real ones taking many seats with lower scores. Women, the rich, legacy, sports recruits take up Way more seats with lower scores yet they’re upset about a group that makes up less than 10% at top schools. It’s quite comical and racist. Thank you for calling it out OP. It’s really funny that, again, I’m a white girl at Wharton with below average stats yet no Asian ever questions whether I belong and that’s only because I’m not Black 🤷‍♀️ I also find it comical that people think scores matter so much in MBA admissions. They’re looking for your leader ship skills and soft story. One of my really good Asian friends is from entertainment and her scores were low yet she got into schools across the M7. Just don’t be boring. I don’t think you’ll realize how boring you may sound. All from the same schools, the same companies, and the same cookie cutter “what you wanna do after business school”. When these schools deny you all, I’m sure they’re not making a single mistake. And the responses and obsession with scores show that. So instead of spending 1000 days and 1000 nights day after day just looking at a GMAT book, go start an organization or nonprofit to make your story interesting

Don’t know why G1 can’t simply take back her words. A2 summarized how any person would interpret her words and yes, its racist. G1, since you moved your goal post, you should admit that and move on

Are any of you at HBS? Have you sat in a class room? Have you ‘felt’ the class composition? Have you asked everyone’s stats? Have you heard everyone’s stories? I’m not saying the admissions process is perfect, but I also think there is a degree of being self reflective and thinking about the broader mission of HBS (educate leaders who make a difference) and ask yourself have you been a leader / showed you are a leader? Have you shown you can and will make a difference? Looking at just stats, race, YOE is not someone’s full leadership story. And it’s especially not indicative from a fish bowl thread from one group of people (not all applicants)

Wouldn’t you be frustrated if your race / ethnicity was held to a higher standard?

I have to say looks like Harvard is getting good at filtering ‘numbers or bust’ folks with one-dimensional thinking out. Kudos adcoms .

like

Lol op it’s not your fault we’ve all redefined racism, but sorry to burst your bubble affirmative action and “holistic” admissions are euphemisms for judging different groups differently on the basis of race which is……racist

Oh lmao then we’re on the same page my bad

The problem is, there are so many brown Asians (south and southeast Asians) who grow up with the barriers of being dark skinned (association with terrorism, being mistaken for Uber drivers, etc) who are held to a higher standard than white people and Hispanics (many of whom appear white and thus benefit from white privileged in America) simply because they are part of a broader group that is “overrepresented.” News flash, the only reason brown Asians (and Nigerian-Americans for that matter) are over represented is because US immigration policy literally won’t let us in if we don’t have professional jobs! It is a farce that brown people from one part of the world are seen as ORMs despite facing the same barriers are brown people from another part of the world.

like

It’s not just hbs svmp, that was one example — it’s every single affirmative action program that privileges white hispanics and excludes brown Asians like sophomore internships at MBB and banks

Low IQ and EQ*

All y’all anti affirmative action people are wilding. There is zero data to suggest that black or Hispanic GMAT scores for M7 applicants/admits are any different from white or Asian applicants’/admits’ scores. Y’all openly look for any way to discredit URMs’ success

What is your background OP? If you're someone who doesn't have skin in the game or has benefitted from the existing system - how are you unbiased? And how would you understand the other side of the story?

like

So you have no idea what it is like to be a minority, much less Asian, much less a dark skinned Asian who is held to a higher standard in corporate recruiting and mba admissions despite facing way more barriers in life than white people.

Has anyone considered that maybe, just maybe, some of these schools are genuinely trying to find footing on equality and that it is taking some trial and error to figure out how to achieve just consideration of many factors—how to level that field?

Diversity in the US, according to business schools and corporations, is how many women and black people there are. Institutions are not iterating beyond that axiom.

Exactly. Same stats, same activities, President of the same club. Maybe add a hint of something else to your profile and differentiate yourself! Not trying to be rude but it’s true.

For those that say that it would be better to judge hardships based on economic upbringing, how would this be done? Would you be comfortable providing years of financial data to schools? How many years? What would be the cut off? Would someone who’s family struggled while they were between 5 - 15 years old, be looked differently than someone’s family who struggled between 10 - 20 years old? Just curious on your thoughts on this.

like

It's already being done. If you want social-econonic status be part of your narrative for admission, then supply whatever is required, or don't, but stop complaining. My friend submitted his parents' tax returns to MIT and negotiated down his tuition fee by 60%.

Alright bro tell me how hard your life is

As a South Asian who's parents are working class and didn't really have much of a background in anything professional it sucks. So when it came to getting into schools I didn't know the value of a target school. So I went to a non target. Once I got to school, the more prestigious roles, like transaction services, or banks only came on campus for diversity programs. I unfortunately wasn't qualified for those. These programs unfortunately favor those who have historically been disenfranchised within this program. Am I jealous of not being included, yes I am. But it's compounded even worse cause south asians don't care about south asians. Whites pull for each other, at least more than south Asians. Basically if you're parents are uneducated you're screwed as a South Asian.

What white people feel nothing for other white people based on their being white... honestly south asians (Indian?) People have a strong in-group preference for eachother and live in fairly (though not totally) insular communities. Ymmv
