I need suggestions /opinions if applying for a Senior Solutions Architect (Level6) at AWS makes sense or if I should aim for a Principal SA (level 7) role at AWS with Healthcare & Lifesciences industry experience. If it makes any difference, I worked for AWS ProServe as an external SA in the past. Any insights / feedback appreciated.

I kinda have to agree. I love Pete but this is not the right moment to take time off.

It’s never the right time. There will always be a crisis as we know. Americans are uniquely horrible here with regard to prioritizing families. And women usually end up getting hosed due to the notion that taking off of work to care for a newborn is seen as a luxury and something that just requires one parent. But back to your point, I have never heard anyone say “what a great time to take a few weeks off!” We had the biggest fire drill in our company’s history a few weeks ago and a fellow MD on the engagement peaced out for newborn baby duty. We all covered him!

If you serve in government you own the outcomes. He has the right to paternity leave. He also has the obligation to own the current supply chain situation. He’s not a salaried employee - he serves at our pleasure as an aspect of the current administration. Right now he isn’t serving and the current administration is tanking. I guess Pete is weighing up whether it’s better to be absent when the ship goes down or on deck trying to bail.
Biden approval? Who cares. Most of the population is incapable of understanding the dynamic nature of the world and instead just look at gas prices or Tucker Carlson and decide Biden's doing a poor job

I think if you take a Cabinet Level position you need to serve. Disappointed to see Sec Buttigieg not engaged during the crucial period is negotiating an infrastructure bill and when we have massive supply chain issues.

It’s funny that whenever someone non-white or non-straight gets a job, somebody pins it on their identity. Trump pick wildly unqualified people and nobody said “it’s because Steve is white!” Thinking Pete got the job because of his sexual orientation is just the GOP showing their obsession with identity politics.
Also, if it’s such a crucial time to address these issues, why aren’t any republicans pressing democrats to bring bills to the floor so they can vote and approve them with total bipartisan support? Why are the republicans playing games with the debt ceiling?
Blaming the guy who was appointed to a position, for issues caused by the inaction of officials elected to their positions, is a new one for me.
DoT can’t unilaterally end the Jones Act, it’s part of the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, which means Congress has to amend it. The only instances Section 27 (jones act) can be suspended are if the exemption is “in the interest of national defense” and in such a case, the waiver has to come from the DoD, although other agencies can request a waiver. But in the cases of waivers requested by other agencies, there’s a whole approve process it must go through and the final decision is made by and the waiver issued by Homeland Security, but again, only on the grounds of “national defense” and the waivers are evaluated on a ship by ship basis. The federal maritime commission has no say in the matter. So it is out of the control of the DOT
Second, while I believe that ports should be capable of operating 24/7 in this day and age, that only kicks the can down the road. If you have the port wide open, but no drivers or warehouse space, those are you next bottlenecks and nothing changes. Plus, the federal government, especially the DoT doesn’t have the authority to set those schedules, only the cities/ local authorities do, so despite the current administration urging them to move to 24 hours a day, they don’t have the final say. Regardless, the Port of LA has now said they will move to 24/7 because the current administration brokered the deal.
Third, John Porcai was brought on as a special envoy in August to focus on addressing the constraints. So you have the transportation, agriculture, and commerce departments working together with leaders from the ports, trucking industry, labor, and retail industries on a single task force, plus a former DOT secretary focused on solving the problem, but you are going to say this is Butigieg’s and Biden’s fault?

I like Pete and I'm all in favor of Paternity leave having used it myself...but..there's a certain level of job where there's an expectation of personal sacrifice. Cabinet secretary is, in my opinion, at that level. Especially considering that it is, by all measure a political and temporary job.
Like noted above- just fake outrage whipped up by FOX News
Who is outraged?
👆This is someone who doesn’t understand
It’s ok, not many do.
Yeah I listened to Shapiro's podcast today and thought it was a fairly pathetic angle of attack. Why would you not support someone prioritizing family. Good for Pete. Now he should probably focus on the massive issues the Biden admin has caused.
P1, that’s not the issue right now. If you look at our ports, there are ships just waiting to be be unloaded. Why we don’t have 3 shifts for 24x7 unloading is wild, but unions stopped that.
We also have a massive labor shortage of OTR truckers to move said goods once unloaded.
So it’s a multifaceted issue we are facing.
Trump was on golf leave and/or executive TV time leave for 90% of his time in office, but you’re outraged by Pete taking the paternity leave to which he is entitled? Alrighty then.

I don’t think anyone in this comment thread has much issues with the time off. And I think we’d also agree to the heart of most problems being a lack of good parenting, which you probably see more than any of us.

To me this story just proves why big govt will never be better than the private sector. Would anyone at the SM or PPMD level whose partner is able to stay home really take this much time? Would their practice be able to perform without them for that long? The craziest part of this is that no one seemed to notice or care that he was out, which again to me just shows that department just doesn’t do all that much.
D1 maybe you should be asking why you don’t see it instead of not believing it happens at other firms.
IMHO, anyone in management should always take their time allowed for maternity/paternity leave. That is how this behavior becomes normal and expected.
If you think less of someone because they use their time off, you need to do some self reflection on why that is.
Exactly, why do we even need this position in the first place?
Aren’t they removing paid family leave now?
