I did 2-3 rounds of IUI before jumping into IVF. It’s worth an attempt first
Rising Star
Depends on the reasons you & your partner are facing infertility (and your financial situation in terms of IVF coverage and affordability). Anecdotally, I got pregnant on my second IUI after experiencing a couple miscarriages.
At 38 glad I went straight to IVF because now I have multiple good embryos for future pregnancies. With IUI I would have relied on aging eggs.
IVF is harder on the body though.
Ditto! Also, IUI eats into your lifetime maximum
We’re at 20 weeks with our second child iui on both. Took a couple rounds to work. Again depends on your unique situation.

Like everyone said, depends on your situation. But IVF is a lot more invasive and expensive than IUI so for lost people id say it’s worth a shot first. I got pregnant after 3 IUIs the first time. Second time no luck and moved on to IVF.
I’d also look into what your insurance requirements are- I needed 3 ovulation inductions before I could move to IVF. I thought that was equivalent to IUIs but later found out that my cycles with Letrozole counted. I did 3 cycles of letro and 3 IUIs before doing Ivf with a fresh transfer and then finally getting pregnant with a frozen transfer. Factoring in how long we were trying before and the fact that my diagnosis was unexplained infertility, I would’ve done 2 Letro cycles and 2 iui cycles and then Ivf if I could do it al over again.
I originally wanted to do one round of IUI before moving to IVF. However, during the course of my diagnosis, I got pregnant naturally and it was ectopic. After I recovered, I went straight to IVF because I wanted to reduce the risk of another ectopic. Another reason for me is that my fertility benefits (with Progyny) only covers two “smart” cycles, which means if I had done 3-4 rounds of IUI first I would only have one shot at IVF. I didn’t particularly find the medications/injections for IVF more taxing on the body than IUI (esp if you have to do multiple rounds?) and I have reserve embryos frozen for future pregnancies now.
Depends on your situation and reason for infertility. I did 1 round of IUI & felt like it was a waste of time so I jumped to IVF.
Honestly i did 5 rounds of IUI AND feel like it was a waste of $ - wish i would have gone straight to IVF. However my cousin did and got pregnant the first time so it depends on the person and you never know. I do know i wouldn’t recommend doing 5 IUIs. But it all depends on your reason on struggling to get pregnant. So talk to your dr.
If age is a factor or you are diagnosed with diminished ovarian reserve then go straight to IVF
I have diminished ovarian reserve so I did 1 IUI cycle but now moving onto IVF to see how many eggs I can get. Would rather try earlier than waiting. If I don’t respond well to IVF I can go back to iui or do mini IVF. It really does depend on your diagnosis, your insurance and your finances.
Iui is less intensive then ivf and less expensive, it doesn’t work as well as ivf.
If you can wait and have insurance you could try IUI. I tried3 times and a failed then I did IVF. Failed once. On my second IVF
I did IUI with clomid and it worked! (Thanking god for this). I’m 29 so I had some time, but I’d follow your doctors lead here
