Someone close to me age 20 died on a motorcycle a few years ago and honestly that’s when it hit me. Thankfully I’m on in my late twenties. But you just never know. Take the PTO, enjoy your weekends, and after 5pm. You won’t get it back. Do the company’s we consult for really suffer if we don’t complete a ppt by 5pm? Probably not..
Wow are you me? I think a lot of us struggle with this but I have no helpful advice lol
I think this is an evident situation in firms.. they're hiring and taking advantage of overachievers who need validation from career and just can't get off work without finishing their tasks. Lol
Life is short enjoy it while you can.
For the longest time I struggled with this and tbh still do to an extent. It took a lot of introspection and realization that my value as a person isn’t defined by my comp or title. The key for me was to stop comparing myself to others. I deleted all my social media and that really helped. Just remember that your work is only a piece of overall life and no one on their deathbed ever wished that they had worked more 😊
Thanks for sharing. I agree social media is a big factor since you could compare someone else's life to yours.
im on the same boat. Im so bored and feel unchallenged/motivated right now. I want to go back to consulting life, but I also want to have family in the near future. I don't know what to do
You can get out of the rat race. There is truly so much more to life. You can live on a smaller budget but hsve 10 times the level of rest, happiness, relationship satisfaction and worldly adventure. People are doing it everyday. Think about how many people outside of consulting are traveling the world and living hsppily. Think about the people outside of the Global North that are happy on far less means. Its about really seeing that the things that matter most to you (being respected, simplicity, travel, love) can be achieved without the grueling consulting lifestyle. Im on the other end of this; i currently live that life, travel constantly, etc but im about to join mainstream consulting and I'm deeply grieving for my current/soon to be former lifestyle and am not sure im making the right decision. Im doing it to save money for a business and then return to International Development in a few years.
D, I work in International development so I'm required to travel to Africa (my region of birth and expertise) at least twice a year; I also travel Internationally on my own dime at least twice a year and honestly its not that expensive - i stay with friends or in cheap airbnbs, and flights are usually 2k. When im US based, I save a lot of money by not living a flashy lifestyle. Id say working in development is the #1 factor though because it so easy to country hop when you're already in the region for work. Good luck! Travel when you're young, that's when it can still change you.

One day I woke up and said “lol these dudes in suits working for me and I’m in my pajamas”. You’re the guy wearing a suit
I don't wear a suit. I wear power dresses in stilettos - at least pre-pandemic. Now we all wear pajamas

Have you tried it? How is it compared to consulting?
