It’s not like it used to be. Many eons ago you could work a difficult client or do a favor and go international to help with an assignment to make partner. Now, you have to put in way too many years and compete with way too many people.

I’m not suggesting one did not need to put in an insane amount of hours and work hard, but it’s different now. Much more “standardized” these days. Less avenues to take.

You know they’re very different jobs, right? What do you actually want to do? How do you want to spend your time every day?

This was me. I loved consulting. I liked the travel, I liked building relationships with clients in person, I liked working with my team in a conference room solving problems and then going to get drinks and dinner, I liked the points. Then I had my kid which made me want some of this less. Then the pandemic hit and everything became even more difficult. The work was just not the same for me. All the bad parts (long hours, admin bs, politics) and none of the good. I made SM and left for tech shortly after. No regrets so far. More money, more WLB, different but still interesting work.
What role did you move to?
Ah yes the two industries, Management Consulting and Tech. Clearly no other field exists right?
Not with my skillset and interests, no. But if you have a different POV, then share it instead of being so passive
That’s when you know you have to try even harder for that partnership! Everyone else is probably feeling the same thing you feel. Take the lead while they slack off!
I would hope that in your years of consulting you would have gained valuable skills or worked on engagements outside of tech? Would you not consider working in one of the industries you've consulted for or for one of the client's you've consulted for?

I did that with mine. You just have to get your contractors lined up so you know how much the renno will cost. Also, consider a construction loan: interest only while you renovate, then convert to a full loan once renovation is done
I think you're lost
