I’ve always heard that being at one of the tech Silicon Valley firms sets you up well for in house positions. Is that true across the board or only for folks there who do ECVC or tech trans work? If you’re just doing m&a there, do you still get the same advantages when trying to go in house as compared to m&a from another firm?

Disclaimer, I don’t have much data, but when I was ECVC at one of the major SV ECVC firms the M&A in-house counsel at Google was from Cleary. I suspect if you’re looking for tech in-house M&A, it probably doesn’t matter that much, but if you’re looking to switch to a more general counsel role, it usually helps to lateral to an SV tech firm - one of the M&A laterals I knew dabbled in ECVC work (might have been part of his lateral deal) and ended up in house at a tier-1 VC fund.

Following too

I work at a tech focused SV firm and a ton of our associates in M&A and securities go to tech focused clients (first M&A specialist at a company growing rapidly, position at a Company that just went public as their securities person, etc)

Accepted an offer of employment with a mid-sized firm to begin in a couple of months. I’ve always wanted to shoot for big law but haven’t had the opportunity thus far. Overall, I accepted because I didn’t want to take the opportunity for granted in addition to the uncertainty with hiring due to covid. Would it be an issue to shoot for a big law opportunity in the interim? I know how this looks and sounds, so I definitely don’t want to set a precedent that I deal in bad faith.

Kind of niche question here but under NY CPLR, if a plaintiff files a MTD/MSJ, and then the defendants file opposition papers containing information that the court had previously ordered to be kept under seal, would you a) file a reply asking to seal/strike the opposition papers or b) file a separate OTSC since you’re now seeking additional relief not sought in the original motion?
