I’ve always worked in house. Currently, I’m working on regulatory matters at a startup. While the work and pay have been good, leadership has been all over the place with several departures and org changes. I recently received an offer from a law firm for regulatory work. I’m interested in the opportunity but wondering if it’s worth leaving the cushy, remote in house job. Firm is hybrid. Big pay boost. 1900 billable. Thoughts?

I must tell you that law firms are not known for strong leadership or semblance of management

like

Exactly.

Wow $100k more !?!? I would love that lol

Think very carefully about all the differences between law firms and in house. You will have more than one client which means learning more than one set of “rules” since each client wants things done its way. Many more personalities to deal with, vs the “type” of personality that your company tends to hire. Where you can often tell a colleague at your company that you will complete a project in X time, you will have no control of timing at the firm.

My firm hired an attorney whose whole career was in house and they went back in house 6 months later. It was too different

like

Thank you for this! All great points and good information to have while weighing the decision.

What’s the pay difference?

like

That’s a good amount of money, especially if it doesn’t include bonuses. If the business is successful, you can always leave and come back in a more senior role where you can have a management role. If the business is not successful, then you’ll be glad you left when you did.

like

What's the difference in hours? Are you just getting paid more because you'll be working more hours or are you actually making more per hour? Do you want the more formal, structured, reserved life at a firm?

It’s a a little of both. I will likely work more and at a higher rate. Structure vs flexibility is a big item to factor in. Thanks!

Probably a popular opinion, maybe not to some but I think companies should be planning on how they can keep their workforce WFH post COVID for the well being of everyone in many aspects versus herding people back to the office like cattle once they find a loophole in legal liability. Quality of life has improved so much not having to spend 2+ hours in traffic. It’s the future of working, I don’t see the issue with giving the freedom now to those who have proven they can do it.
