Years ago my boss told me, “there’s a finite amount of money you can ever make for being great as a writer or designer. Every dollar you make beyond that will be the money you make getting paid to do things you don’t like. Which is why there’s always a point where you make enough money to hate your job. Look for the balance.”
What? You don’t like back-to-back meetings constantly presenting work you just saw or barely remember? Why wouldn’t that be fun? Everyone who thinks being a CD is the end goal, slow your roll.
If you don’t work at a sweatshop that keeps you online 8a-11p (I’ve been there), make sure you keep a personal project or two on the side (spec work, non profits, an art Instagram account) so you can keep the dirt under your fingernails. That has been very important for me.
I felt this. Lol
Some creative leaders never quit designing (to the dismay of the actual designers working for them). One more won’t hurt!
Yes, all the time. Or just coming up with ideas. Would be happy doing either. With the same $.
All the time!
100%. The feeling of knowing you killed a brief with a simple idea 👌
Yes. I tried demoting myself to ACD a couple years ago. It didn’t work.
Well, maybe you should try it?
