I’ve always found that the best way to ask for a promotion is to go to your manager and say that my goal right now is to move from JR. Copywriter to copywriter. Can you tell me exactly what you’d like to see from me so that we can make that happen?
That’s the best way for sure. Also, all the things you’ve listed in your post are responsibilities I had as a junior.
Here’s another perspective, a promotion or a raise is a personal decision as well. Do you want the title or a raise? There’s a difference in both. You can approach your manager to ask for a review and tell them your goals. Ask them what would set you for success and can you do checkins to ensure you’re developing your career. I don’t like to limit jrs because I’ve met some talented and deserving ones so I wouldn’t necessarily say you’re not ready in a year. As for a raise, I got a raise within 6 months of working at my very first agency and was promoted in less than a year. The raise was helpful too because rent is high! A raise has nothing to do with your title but if you deserve it, don’t second guess yourself. Shadow your managers, learn as much from them as you can, be hungry and who knows, you probably are qualified.
I started off at a small agency and it still took me two years and switching agencies to drop my junior title! However, it seems like you might be in a good place to ask for a raise at least. Maybe start there!
Don’t. Approach your manager about getting more opportunities. 1 year in you should be working on as many things as you can as much as you can do you can learn. What’s a promotion going to do for you a year out of ad school at small shop? Nothing except make it look like you have a title you don’t deserve. Your work will get you promoted not time spent in an office. If they like you and your good ask for more assignments not a bigger title.

including presenting and being in communication with clients on calls. Even lead some work for a few weeks while Sr team was on a shoot. Also, it being a smaller agency, I likely have more responsibility than jrs elsewhere so Id prefer not to leave
Were you a junior at a previous agency too, or have you only held the junior copywriter title for a year?
Just one year. But like I said, it’s smaller so we do a lot more than jrs at places where I have friends
I don’t think there was a time when I knew I was ready. From junior to CD, the job is essentially the same. Do good work. Treat people well. Help newer people learn and help experienced people get stuff done. But I was never a "titles guy”. At least not until I was a senior and saw value in getting on a CD path. It might have took two years to go from junior to mid. But honestly, there was nothing meaningful about it. My promotions mostly came on their own and on a reasonable timeline. I didn’t do a lot of asking about it at that stage. I’m a nice person and I do good work - that was good enough for my jobs to say “hey let’s make him a mid level/senior/etc”.
