I’ve been accepted on a full scholarship to Fordham for an MBA and no scholarship to Dartmouth. I want to move into MBB / Big 4 as a consultant although I’m still considering IB as well. If I’m top of the class would I still be realistically able to achieve these goals at Fordham or should I just take the hit financially and pick the higher ranked?

I would take the Fordham opportunity, not having the debt from Dartmouth will give you options and you can definitely get into B4 consulting with an MBA from there. This is just my personal view as I see there being a lot of economic uncertainty over the next few years so not carrying a lot of debt will give you flexibility to adjust to what ever the economic circumstances are when you graduate.

I went to Fordham. While it’s possible to do well after, I have colleagues who also didn’t do well after. Fordham’s alumni base isn’t very helpful and everyone is more interested in competing with each other than actually helping each other. Alumni events become a place for people to one up each other to the point that I don’t even attend anymore. Career development chose favorites when I was there and if you weren’t a favorite they wouldn’t help you secure and internship or job. I wasn’t a favorite and I had no internship but I’m probably one of the most successful alumni in my class in investment banking in a bulge bracket. I didn’t feel like I learned anything at Fordham - I learned everything on my own outside. The classes are a complete joke. The opportunities outside of operations are few and far between. It’s great for part time and most of the people I know who were part time did really well. I ended up networking mostly with those who were part time which is how I ended up getting my first job when I graduated. It’s what the career development office recommends. Also, it was like 70% Chinese who struggled with English and 30% was American/other international. When you have to work in a group this becomes very difficult as communication isn’t great. I would suggest Dartmouth. You can easily get a job in investment banking and payoff your loans within 2 years. I ended up paying mine off in 5 years but I got very lucky. Feel free to DM me with any other questions.

Target MBAs (like Dartmouth) give you a much higher probability of landing a job in MBB or IB. You’ll get the benefit of MBB/IB recruiting directly from your program whereas at a non-target, you won’t have as easy a time getting your resume looked at. I say this generally as there are always exceptions, but if your goal is to go to MBB/IB, the path of least resistance is Dartmouth.

like

You'll have to depend way more on yourself and your ability to network and prep at Fordham, and will need to be ready for more disappointments. I'm not saying Dartmouth solves it all but if you are able to take the financial hit, I would. The name and network do make a difference, even when sometimes they shouldn't

like

That is true. Especially if they get an internship with one of them.

Everyone has some good advice and I’d say I agree with most folks regarding Dartmouth’s potential for MBB/IB campus recruiting. I can’t speak for the education, but it is ranked Top 10/25 consistently, which is not the case for Fordham. I did my MBA at Fordham part-time and it was a solid education. It exceeded my expectations and I still draw on the coursework for my career (commercial banking).

If you have no connections to MBB/IB and certain of the MBB/IB route then Dartmouth and debt is likely the better route

If you have some connections to MBB/IB and you’re not 100% on MBB/IB track, but want a solid education then Fordham is a good choice.

Last words for thought, in 20+ years of working in banking I’ve worked with people from a variety of public, private, and ivy league schools. A total mixed bag of experiences and backgrounds. Getting an MBA will help expand your education, not get you a career.

Do the best you can with what you have. Take the Fordham opportunity and do not have the pressure of debt. I’ve been in B4. I was a non-traditional candidate; which means I was older and not just out of grad school. It was a career transition for me.

However, I met new grads who came from other non-typical schools who did well and are succeeding in B4. You are responsible for your success and opportunities no matter where you attend school.

like

I’d pick the higher ranked school and see if there are other scholarship opportunities… for undergrad, I have a friend who reached out to the admissions office and said something along the lines of “school 1 is my first choice but I’ve gotten money from school 2. Are there any scholarship opportunities you can point me towards? I’ve already looked at X, Y, and Z”

You need the I’ve already looked at piece so you don’t look helpless

like

Congratulations!!! I went to Fordham so I am a little biased. But, the full scholarship option is the winner for me. I’d choose Fordham all over again.

Was career services useful in helping you get internships? Were there coffee chats / days where companies came to campus etc? Thanks

From experience, I would take the full ride. Build your network and chart your path based on what you know you want to learn and do in the future. I chose a scholarship over name and it’s the best choice I ever made. Not having ridiculous debt hanging over me has made me happier, allowed me more flexibility in my subsequent decisions, and has allowed me to build a true network of people and relationships that I actually value.

Go to Tuck.

You will not only have a higher chance of landing a management consulting gig, but also when looking past the 3-5 years post-MBA you will have a much higher performing cohort of classmates (on average), many of whom will be either a) clients if you go partner track, or b) sources of opportunities post-consulting

like

I always recommend going to the better school. I went for Fordham undergrad but the grad program isn't as strong. You'll have way better networking and job leads coming out of Tuck than Gabelli Grad. The one trade off is Fordham is right in Manhattan and Tuck is in NH, so the ability to get out and meet people is easier at Fordham.

Hey I think Dartmouth is a great opportunity, it will eventually pay itself. I am in grad school at a non target after getting accepted into the Harvard equivalent in Europe, but basically decided for the non target because of no debt. I regret my decision immensely, do Dartmouth.

like

Just to note- salary for first 1-5 years IB track is 200-500k total comp - use two bonus cycle to pay off the better school
You want a target school and the alumni network pays off in itself ...
if you got in - go to the better school

like

From experience, I would pick the top school. From networking and recruiting opportunities, you will be ahead. Good luck!

like

I recommend going to the school you like more. If you can, think less about the cost and more about which will open up more opportunities and give you the experience and network you want in the long run. I was so concerned about debt when applying for school. What I didn’t fully understand was I had a lot of say over how quickly I paid it off (e.g., lifestyle choices, city I lived in, job I took, what I did with my bonus). I had a half scholarship to a top school and no undergrad debt but no extra support for b school. I was focused on getting out of debt, so I paid for my non tuition expenses second year with my internship salary. Then I finished paying off school 2.5 years after graduation. I had to make some trade offs but by no means was scrimping all the time. Run some numbers and see what you’re comfortable with for taking on debt.

Go to Dartmouth. It's a better decision over the long term to have the ivy league degree. The $200K difference should be evaluated over the useful life of your career. The OCR and the helpful alumni network and future prospects beyond the MBB / banking opps quickly gets you over the payback period hump

like

Fordham is not a target school for MBB or IB. What this means is, there are no firm wide presentations there, no guaranteed coffee chat, no guided OCR with them. If either of those paths are your intended outcomes, do yourself a favor and just go to Dartmouth.

I didn’t spend much time looking but I couldn’t even find a real employment report on Fordham’s site—just “sample employers” that don’t provide you much insight. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide if you’d prefer a 10% chance vs an 80% chance (illustrative but you get my point). That being said, be aware that MBB recruiting is tough even at M7 schools. Much better odds, but you and everyone else is gunning for MBB and there’s a chance your summer offer will come from a “tier 2”.

like

The mfqf program at Fordham was really good and all of the people in that program got internships - some even on buy side and every single one got placed into a job at a bulge bracket upon graduation. I have a more positive opinion of this program than the MBA program, if you can get into it with a full ride I would do this!

like

Dartmouth Tuck

The difference is so vast the scholarship can’t make up for it. A Fordham MBA will automatically exclude you from a vast array of jobs no matter how well you do.

like

This is a no-brainer, I would pick Dartmouth in a heartbeat.
