I’ve been an audit staff accountant for 5 years and have my CPA license at a local firm. What opportunities are there for transitioning out of public accounting? Looking for better hours & work life balance. Just getting bored with the work and never ending busy seasons. What common positions do people transition into?

Is there a reason you haven’t moved up? Not being judgmental, just genuinely curious. It’s unusual for a CPA to be in that position for that long. Exit opportunities are generally better after you have moved up a level or two but not impossible as a staff

like

True. I used to work at a small firm 10 employees. They never had something called promotion, just a small raise every year.

You’ve been an associate/ staff accountant for 5 years? Usually most people take jobs in industry working for a company in the same field they worked in. The most experienced you are- the higher the position you can get. Usually seniors and managers can get controller type positions and staff will get more entry level positions

Plenty of jobs in private you can entertain...every company has an accounting function. Find an industry you enjoy and start applying.

I think no matter what, you need to jump. Don’t stay in the same one firm at the same title for that long. Either getting into bigger firm or going to industry are good for you.

like

Either go into finance or senior accountant or try to do a year at big 4 for better exit opportunities

Most smaller firms do not have levels per se but are you performing reviews of others work…or it just all work delegated to you and partner handles client contact and reviews. Tax and audit work or just compilations and reviews. Or small privately held client base with monthly bookkeeping and close process with quarterly taxes etc?

Definitely at a smaller firm with around 50 employees total split between tax and audit. The audit side is probably 15 employees total. I primarily work in audit handling all levels of the audit engagement/client contacts with a partners final review. Usually have to do the entire audit on my own and seek help when needed. Just got my license a few months ago.

How many of you all are getting the “you could make partner here”, “you are throwing away your opportunity for further career advancement” or “why would you go work for THAT client?” conversations when considering making a change from public accounting to industry? I feel like this is what all partners are going to say to try and retain people with busy season coming up but want to check. Anyone made the leap from PA to corp accounting and what has your experience been like?

I had left ZS Associates due its long working hours. I want to know if the general work life situation has changed now. Would love to join back if it has changed.

Since long working hours is a relative term, here's my definition of it -
I was working out of ZS Pune office and had a team meeting everyday at 10am. We used to leave office between 10.30-11.30pm daily. If there were any follow-ups after the onshore calls, we used to stretch till 2am or so (once or twice a fortnight).

If a company offers free session with mental counselors and therapists as benefits, do you think this would be an indicative that the work can be bad for you?

I know some insurance benefits provide it, but certain companies also offer paid sessions. Although this sounds great...I wonder if this shouldn't be seen as red flag for a toxic environment or unhealthy job in the long term.
