I've been contemplating about leaving PA and starting my own CPA for a while now... anyone know of any success stories or advice/tips before making this move?

Actually yes I know 3 people. They were very heavy tax seniors with a ton of generalist experience. They were all Chinese and one of them spent like 10k on advertising alone. They are all doing well.

I know 2 other people, one went back to private and said that it's easier to work for someone else. The other has a spouse who works so she has a sort of safety if things dry up. She basically works from her basement and does a bunch of individual returns and bookkeeping for like pizza stores and corner stores.

I don't know anyone that created their own like real cpa firm and hired a bunch of people. I would think it would take a couple of years to build a book of business as that big. You would need to go in with a partner for that.

I know a guy who started one like GT1's stories. Heavy senior. I'm getting ready to make the jump and partner with him.

Thanks for the insights GT1!

What’s a heavy senior?

Almost manager. He would have been promoted if he stuck around.

I’m hating my job so bad I fantasize about walking out on my boss. My work itself is enjoyable but my boss (co-founder and CEO of a Series C startup) has become such a pain it ruins my mental health and family life. Working 12-15hrs everyday, working on many weekends, yet no appropriate for my work. We are mostly remote so a lot of interactions are over Slack. Now, I could never imagine one can be so obnoxious and mean over Slack messages when talking about work. I want to run away everyday.

Does anyone know if you could file a non-automatic and an automatic change on the same 3115? I have a situation where a non-automatic change needs to be filed to move items from building to 5 and 15 year property as a result of a cost seg. Also want to do the automatic change from 40 to 30 years ADS for Residential Real Property under 163j. Missed the deadline to file the non-automatic in 2020 and doesn’t make sense to do the 40 to 30 change first.

I have two job offers from start-up companies:

Option 1 - well known fintech company and about to go IPO. Will be doing corporate tax. Probably will turn into hybrid of WFH/coming into the office.

Option 2 - series A (been around about 3 years). Tax operation with high possibility of being exposed to other areas in accounting and finance of the company. Fully remote.

Compensation from both companies are the same. I would appreciate some advice on which option would you choose and why.

I want to transfer to audit after a year as analyst in Big 4 tax. It is doable? Should I start by having a chat with coach? I’ve only seen people transfer from Audit to tax but haven’t seen the opposite in my team. I don’t hate tax but I might need to move to another country at one point and tax is too geographically limited. Also, I prefer being a generalist than being a specialist. And reading income tax act isn’t really my thing. Just don’t see myself being a tax expert and wanna try audit.

Currently working tax at a Midsized firm, the largest in my city, and we have reached a tipping point where every additional resignation means more work for those left. The firm has only doubled down on old rhetoric demanding people back in office and 55 hrs min a week to get the work done.

This is my first white collar job, and I'm wondering if every firm is like this, if I should jump ship too, or if I'm being a stupid millennial.

Any guidance would be great.
Thanks!

I’m a CPA and everyone automatically assumes that I know everything about taxes and always ask me questions. That being said I have a friend who owns multiple investment properties as an LLC but wanted to inquire about potentially forming an S Corp, so I told her the basics but wanted to actually give her more in depth info. If someone could help me out I would appreciate, a DM is ok as well so we could exchange contact info.
