I’ve been doing insurance defense litigation at small firms in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area for 10 years now, in a small-firm environment (currently at a firm with about 15 attorneys). Billables are good at around 1,800 but I suspect that I’m getting robbed on salary/compensation (around $90k altogether).

Contemporaries out there (smaller insurance defense firms around the Midwest), what does your salary/compensation structure look like?

Hello. I’m evaluating an offer from Bay Area company. First year comp will be ~370k (base+bonus+RSU). Is this good enough for a family of 3 to live a decent life? I’ll be moving from Vancouver (Canada) and planning on renting for about an year.

Backstory: started with a company back in July. Negotiated a very competitive salary package, I was able to work out a guarantee to take a draw for the first 6 months until I get ramped. But I have yet to make any real impact for the company within the first 10 weeks. I feel terrible for taking “commissions that I didn’t earn or show any progress”. Would I be an idiot to talk to my vp and say don’t pay my commission until it’s earned?

I became a 2 year lawyer in September. I started working at my firm, a mid-sized firm practicing commercial business litigation and PI, in March of 2020. Last year I made the firm $180k from my billable hours and I was paid $85k + full health and other benefits.

This year, I'm on track to make about $150k and to make the firm about $450k from my billable hours and PI cases that I originated and settled.

How saturated is the Medicaid planning / elder law area in Florida? Looking to branch into this area as I find it really interesting.

I’m a 2nd yr. attorney at small firm with two partners practicing solely contract litigation. I’ve been actively networking and trying to build my own book. I now have a potential client who is ready to litigate a dispute in different area of the law (a simple tort matter). My partners aren’t keen on taking case as it’s outside the firm’s practice area. Aside from having this potential client pay a large retainer, is there anyway to convince/persuade my partners to allow me to take this case?

For a Rule 45 subpoena duces tecum, can I mail it to the stat agent for a company or LLC? I took a case over from another firm and they sent subpoenas with a process server who was unable to personally deliver the subpoenas to the stat agent. I have always just mailed them.

I started my firm recently (immigration) and am a true solo. I have experience in a few very specific case types and do lots of research, but don't have enough experience to easily strategize for each consult. I’m seriously considering starting up a solo shop. I have a very reliable stream of business (family friend has one patent that was infringed multiple times, huge firms have taken a few of these on contingency).
