I’ve been going through a tough breakup that left me a bit devastated. I’m dealing with it but the problem is I’m having a really hard time focussing on work, while right now it’s crunch time on an understaffed project. Anyone been in a similar situation? Any advice on how I can have a better focus while working through this? I can’t mess this up due to this breakup…

OP, I just told my managing partner that I had something happen with my SO and it’s really impacted me, and that I can keep running the project, but I do need a little slack with respect to self care time. He was so kind, and said to do whatever I needed. I know not everyone is comfortable with this sort of vulnerability, but given the nature of the work we do and its unforgiving quality when real life happens, I find this approach has been most effective for me.

I did the same earlier this week actually, I confided in my managing partner. He was also very understanding, told me to cut myself some slack and take all the time I needed. That definitely helped, great advice indeed. It’s just that this project was something I fought for and it’s important to me to do well despite my personal situation. Feels like it’s the only thing I can control at the moment

Maybe allot yourself a little extra time in the morning to get centered and do something you like, then promise yourself a break midday and in the evening, even if it’s just 20 minutes. It’ll give you something to push towards and also a period of time where you can feel what you’re feeling without it interrupting work. When I had a similar situation, it felt like that doom and gloom was hanging over me constantly unless I stopped, took inventory of what was important to me that morning, then committed to keeping good face until my next break, and repeated.

Also, I’m sorry OP. Heartbreak is one of the worst feelings in the world. Sending really warm wishes your way. It will get better soon and you will grow as a result of it. ❤️

Alright - for the ladies who found other jobs while on mat leave: when did you give notice - on your first day back? I suspect my firm won’t want to pay me for two weeks to just stick around without a project, correct? Thanks in advance for any anecdotes or helpful tips.

The long and the short of it. I was laid off a couple of months ago, the clients on the account I ran loved me. Can I hit the client up about freelance? I felt I was designated as the scape goat. Continued.

SEA PAs that you admire the most in terms of “quality of projects - you want” and “leadership know what they are doing in project” => So, you like what you do in relatively sustainable way.

Hi 👋🏻 I’m new here! For people working in big 4 risk assurance, how many clients do you generally juggle at a time and how many hours do you typically work in a week? I just started a few months ago in an IA role for a company after working in external audit. I like the work, but it’s just not a great culture fit and I’m thinking of boomeranging back to public but for IA to get more of that experience.

I’ve been through 5+ weeks of interviews with a company that will IPO next year and they did a bait and switch on me with the offer: it was advertised as “Head of” and then during the offer-walk-through-meeting today they said “oh btw we changed the title to ‘Senior Manager’ for this role”. They offered me a salary I made 4 years ago as a manager. They offered stock options with an exercise price TBD 1 year from now…which is when they’re hitting IPO. Is that normal for stock options?
