You are going to wantto find newer construction if that is critical to you. May have to expand your search area. Not many people remediate and get rid of the old lead paint because it’s prohibitively expensive.

If a landlord hasn’t tested, they aren’t going to for you. You’re better off finding a new construction apartment to rent.
By “not aware” means they haven’t tested, so there’s no way to be sure for them.
What about Avalon condos in Waltham? You get a little bit of grass around you if that’s what you’re looking for. Very kid friendly.
There are a few new condo buildings in Watertown which is very close to Cambridge and Belmont.
Most homes here are not de leaded around here and it’s generally not an issue unless you are knawing on the paint directly (Ie child chewing on windowsill) it’s not an issue.
“Those areas” means basically the Boston suburbs….it’s an old city with largely older housing…you have to think….if all thr Uber educate folk in the area live in homes that may/may not have lead paint…then probably it’s not that big of a deal…
Also. Fair or unfair…it’s a very competitive rental market and even asking about lead paint will make you a less desirable tenant…and I wouldn’t be surprised if some of these apartments are suddenly unavailable/already rented when you go back to them.
I’m with you on the lead exposure. Especially after all of those reports coming out now about boomers and their exposure levels throughout the 70s and 80s.
Also be sure to check the superfund locator bc a lot of towns here that are surprisingly cheaper have cleanup sites around. NH has a lot of issues with PFAS exposure in drinking water. Was a huge topic during their last state elections.
Pretty much what I have been feeling.. Seems like there isn’t strong enough demand push for lead-free house (and I get it that it disadvantages me). At the same time, trying to be in those areas because of the good schools. Will work around the small subset of options that I have then.. :(
That could be true, but also isn’t it illegal to lease a house to tenants with a child younger than 6 y.o? Or maybe I’m wrong..
Just additional unrelated context, considering those areas because of the good school zone.

No it’s not illegal.
Your exact situation as someone looking to rent, wants a specific school district, and quickly goes to legal rights in your quest for a rental home is exactly the scenario landlords want to avoid and generally that is why it is lucrative to be a landlord in an area catering to young professionals where this is less of an issue…but not in areas best suited to families with children.
