It shouldn’t be an issue if they’re decent people/you work for a decent employer. I’d just be honest and open up, probably through a one on one call with your manager. They may notice something is off anyway and appreciate the explanation. We’re all human at the end of the day and we have challenges
1. Call your HR manager. Many firms of all sizes have excellent insurance. Access to qualified, and covered, help may be closer than you realize. HR is supposed to be your advocate to the leaders.
2. Be open and honest, if and only if, you feel comfortable. It will help to share at least a few tidbits, but shouldn't be required.
3. You'll be surprised how many people around you are experiencing the same/similar challenges. You'll have lot's of empathy and offers of help.
4. This isn't a challenge faced by any certain level. Don't feel alone, because you are not alone.
HR is to protect the firm, not the employee. May be helpful here in identifying resources and thinking through alternatives, but HR is not designed to advocate for employees
My approach has always been to be honest. How much you tell is up to you, but communication is key. Let them know you fully intend to complete the work, you just need some additional time.
If your comfortable talking with your manager, you should tell them. Everyone is struggling right now, but unless you say something nobody knows how they can better support you. I wish my staff would be more transparent on how they are feeling.
