After all this time (4+ years of knowing each other and 7 months of dating), he tells me he lied to me about completing his bachelor's! He said it was out of embarrassment in the moment i asked and he didn't know how to address it later. Its bothersome that in the time we dated
1. He didn't feel he could be open with me.
2. He finds it easier to lie than say "I'd rather discuss this at a later time"
3. Didnt think about it from my perspective at all. Its feeling like a breach of trust.
Truthfulness is bery important to me. Am I over reacting?
That’s very odd behavior. It’s not that embarrassing to admit you didn’t finish undergrad. Personally, that’s not something I’d judge someone for if they were going through stuff or had a better opportunity outside of pursuing education.
The fact that he held that in is strange and could be hiding a bigger personality trait (purposefully not calling it a flaw). I wouldn’t say you’re overreacting. People will hide stuff but if it bothers you, you probably should think of how to either (I) bring it up to him and ensure it doesn’t happen again (and see what else he’s hiding) or (II) get out.
Is there nothing in your past that you’d rather remain hidden? Nothing in your past that embarrasses you? He told you the truth about something that embarrasses him. Sure, it would have been better if he had the confidence to tell you immediately, but he didn’t. While you may be irritated or even angry, think how you would feel if it was your embarrassment coming to light. Show grace. I get there’s concern if he’s a liar. I totally understand that. But he came clean. Show him grace now, so he’ll show you grace when it’s your turn to be embarrassed. Show him grace now to begin creating a trusting, open relationship where you BOTH can talk about things that bother you.
Is it affecting his job viability and career? If not, does it really matter? Dude’s embarrassed.
If it rubs you the wrong way, listen to yourself.
Ya im only concerned about the behavior of lying out of embarrassment, not the career. Thats fortunately not an issue. I get it, no one's a saint but lying rubs ME the wrong way 🤦♀️
