I've been in advertising for 4 years with no awards. Should I quit?

If you seek fulfillment through awards or career progression, you'll likely never find it.

Sounds trite, and don’t answer, but how’s your family? How’s life outside work? If this is what you’re finding success in, it’ll always fail you.

You win gold, they’ll ride you till you get two. Get two they’ll say “that was years ago. What else you got?”

Awards aren't everything. If you're creating work that works for clients the awards will follow.

Also, who the hell wants to be a CD?! I’m serious. Sure, you get a bit more money. But you’re stuck in meeting all day and barely get to do any of the fun stuff. Enjoy being a creative. I held out for 9 years.

like

I didn’t win any awards until 6 years in. You’re fine. Getting great ideas made is a war of attrition. Just keep bringing top level ideas on every single brief even when they all keep dying. Eventually something will hit. As long as you always bring it. You’re good

like

I know a guy who didn’t win anything for close to 10 years. He’s won multiple lions every year since and is a CD at one of the best agencies in NYC. Be patient, the people who win them early are VERY lucky

If that’s the only reason you went into advertising, yes. By all means. Leave.

Nobody cares about awards except lame ad people that are insecure. Their band, troupe or business failed. Maybe they’ll get recognition somewhere else. That’s called ego. Did your realtor, doctor, lawyer etc, win the in-office triple gold star jubilee award? If they did, would anyone even know what that means? Would anyone even care? Cannes gives out thousands and thousands awards. It doesn’t really mean much, so dont quit because you haven’t won a pencil or a thingamajig award. Quit because this industry is toxic af and incredibly lame.

Don’t sweat it, work very hard and be nice and friendly. Have fun. Nobody will ever remember what awards you won, but they will remember who you are as a person. Smile more and worry about what others are doing less, trust me I’ve been there and it’s not fun. There will always be people with more awards and more success.

like

Awards are meaningless and a silly ego boost that doesn't necessarily do anything. Our job isn't to get awards it's to do good work that helps the client. And before someone comments this is from someone who doesn't have awards, I have them, I just don't care and I don't put it on my resume either.

likefunny

Awards are everything until you’re pitching a huge bank...then all of the sudden, nobody cares as long as you’re smart and can solve the problem at hand. This is a big business with lots of different kinds of problems. And as long as you learn to solve one or two of them reliably, there will always be a place for you at the table.

likeuplifting

It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Your biggest goal should be a long career, not just an award winning one. And stop comparing yourself to others, it’s the fastest route to misery.

And if you’re friends are CDs after 4 years, lol

likefunny

Who are these CDs with 4 years experience?

like

I’m right there with you. No awards and crap assignments for 4 years. Now unemployed and watching all my friends move on ahead while I can’t even get an interview. Just rebuilt my bartending resume even though I really don’t want to go back to that

like

4 years is not that long - there are people who make banners for 4 years before getting promoted. As long as you’re making stuff, getting experience, and like what you do, awards and promotions will come. You can also come up with a proactive idea and bring it to your superiors. Half the shit that wins isn’t even for paying clients anymore.

like

I've never won awards and I'm on track to being CD in the next 6 months. Awards aren't everything. That said, they for sure help inflate your ego and confidence.

like

Senior copy 2 nailed it.

This shitty business will always find a way to knock you down. A very talented friend of mine didn’t get a job because the agency only wanted recent gran prix winners-and he has his share of awards...smdh

I am considering switching practice areas. I currently practice in personal injury litigation on the defense side. I have been in the PI practice in some way, shape or form for the last 9 years. However, I think it’s time for a change for me. I am looking for guidance as to how to switch over. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Has anyone here left a job just to free up the time to search for openings elsewhere? My current firm is drowning me in garbage work that feels like a massive waste of my time, and I barely have time to breathe. 29M single and I’m moving across the country next week from my hometown. This move is by choice to somewhere I’ve always wanted to live but I’m kind of getting cold feet. I’m leaving behind my best friends and family. I’ve lived here for about 25years. 3 years were other cities within the state and 1 also across the country. But I also feel like I’m at a point in life where if I want to move I should do it now before I have my own family. How has your experience been moving in your late 20s?
