I’ve been in the federal consulting space for the past 6 years, with 9+ YOE overall. I’m so burned out from federal consulting. Our clients have such a low bar to clear themselves and are checked out most days. Our work is measured mostly through vanity metrics that don’t consider impact or innovation at all. I’m thinking a jump to commercial consulting could offer a much needed break in both compensation and challenging, meaningful work, but don’t know what firms or roles to target.

Background: < 1 YOE technical, the other 9 years non-technical or technical adjacent. Currently making $115k TC. Recently graduated with my MBA with an IT Management concentration. I would love to get into a more technical role and continue to develop those skills but don’t want to slide back compensation-wise (if anything I want to jump ahead another 15-30% with my next change). Am I asking for too much or is a pivot still within reach without totally derailing my career progression?

The problem I have found is the range of products the commercial side expects you to support and the composition usually doesn't match up. If your working for a larger contractor you could try the internal IT group to be more up to date then gov customers. Seems like your looking for a technical management role but that has been a crossroads for me as it's hard to find a management role where you still have time to press buttons and keep up with tech.

Personalty wise I am a horrible negotiator and I hate confrontation. I am having a hard time adjusting to some of my new duties which include commercial contract negotiations. I used to do public company disclosure and SEC reporting, which I recall fit my personality a lot better. Employer no longer public so had to shift roles but now I think I need to leave or find some other area that would better fit me. Any suggestions?

I don’t want to quit and then not get hired due to an error in my background check.

Hi! Any advice for someone looking to pivot from finance to an HR-related role? I have a really great connection at a company I'd love to work for who wants me to send him my resume and a letter of interest for a Talent Development Partner role. I know deep down I would be a great fit and do great, exciting work but I'm having a hard time highlighting transferrable skills. About 10 years ago, I worked in HR talent development, so I have that I suppose. Any tips? Thanks!

Can I decline? Should I? How? Or recommend to give to my replacement when we hire them?

I’ve been a lawyer for a little over 8 years and I think it’s time to move on to a new career. I ruined my legal career by staying in a shitty practice area for too long and now I can’t leave. I took the bar in another state and unsuccessfully job-hunter there for a year, then job hunted here ~6 months, no luck. I want to do something else. I want a good career, with job security, reasonable hours, a good salary potential, and something that isn’t miserable and relentlessly adversarial.

Seeking advice - I didn’t graduate with a finance or accounting degree but have recently landed a junior accounting role (billing management / invoicing) I can see myself growing in this field and have started to learn more about financial/economic terms which interests me. I feel really behind and I’m just not sure what career paths are available or what senior roles I should be striving for given my background. Any thoughts as to how I can best develop from my junior accounting role?
