I’ve been looking for a new job for months & finally found one that’s a good fit. Going in-house (I’m a 7th year). I cannot help but feel nonstop anxiety. The base salary is $50K more than I make now, plus equity so the jump makes sense - I’m just legitimately terrified. Tips???

Be excited! More money and no billable hours—you found the dream. Moreover, you’ll always have exit options to other in-house positions; if you don’t like, stick it out for a year and a half (which is doable even in the worst of situations) and then move on. In the meantime collect that extra cash and forget that you ever had to measure the value of your time in .1 increments!

Question as to why a year and a half ?

I went in house. Was great but I learned that I prefer the law firm. So I went back after eight months. You have control. Nothing is permanent. Everyone has doubts all the time about their lives.

like

I went to my old firm. I have good academic credentials otherwise so I felt like I could have gone to another firm too but that would have looked odd on my resume.

like

Just take it one task at a time. You’ll do great.

like

Thank you!

Why are you terrified?

Honestly, no idea. Where I’m at now is the devil I know. This is whole new different group of people & different dynamic.

Is it common in the industry for licensed insurance agents to not get any commissions on a referral in which you personally write the policy? Ex: If a current client refers a prospect to our team, I would not receive commission. Additionally, if I write a policy for friends/family I would get a small incentive but it’s a fraction of the commission producers make.
Management is considering changing this going forward. However, I’m not sure how I should react if they keep things how they are now.

I remember when I first started working on my thesis project. My adviser asked me to get some funding for it, but he didn't give me any advice about how to do that. He just told me that if I wanted money for my project, I'd have to go through some kind of committee process and submit an application for funding from them. Sure enough, after weeks of writing applications and waiting around for responses from the committee members (who were always too busy), I eventually got approved for funding!

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

I’ve been in an in-house role since the beginning of the year and just gave 2 weeks’ notice to leave for a much better paying and better titled position. The response has been very petty, to the point that I’ve been called unprofessional even after I asked the hiring attorney whether I could give longer notice at the current company’s request. Is this normal?

I’m currently at a medium sized tech startup. I was interviewing for a role that would be a bump in pay and title at a multinational public F50 company. At first, the hiring manager and head of legal were very complementary about my experience. Almost too much so. After a week of interviews with the team (softball-esq), I was informed that if I wanted to join, they would bring me on at a lower title. I’m not sure about comp yet. But if comp is still an increase + experience at a public..
