When I graduated from law school there was one career path I absolutely did not want: criminal law. I didn’t think I had the ability to think on my feet in court in front of a gallery of people. I graduated just before the first recession at a time when firms were closing the doors as they were already feeling the strain. After months of searching, I found exactly one job: being a deputy prosecutor. I was eating expired food, so I accepted. It made me into the attorney I am today. I learned quickly how to work through my anxiety when faced with no other choice. I ended up loving the work. Alas, there is little upward mobility in that type of position. So, after nearly five years I transitioned to elder law. I didn’t pick that practice area, either. It was the position available when I needed to pivot. I’ve been practicing in that area for about eight years now and I love it, too. You may find you stumble upon something you like more than your self-defined dream job - if you stay open to the potential to excel and enjoy the work. Good luck with your new position!

Wow, thank you! Great insight. Happy you found something you love practicing

I would take the job, especially if you’ve been out of work for a significant period of time and you need a paycheck and benefits. You can always switch jobs later if you are unhappy and it’s a very simple explanation in future interviews about why you took this job. I also think it’s better to have this job than a huge gap of time on your resume. And as Founding Partner Attorney 1 wrote above, you might like it much more than you expect!

what industry was it that you wanted to be in? maybe it’ll be possible to transition later when things are more stable?

I was swarmed with work in June and until 10 days ago, now everything's gone silent again. I'm guessing it's directly related to the COVID uncertainty (e.g. 2nd waves and all). Until we have a vaccine we won't be making a lot of money, I guess. I'm on track to bill 1750 hours this year if I'm lucky.

Apparently more than a few of my firm's associates moved to other states during COVID and are now quitting because we are coming back to the office. The wierd thing is that my office is quickly replacing those associates with other associates that moved here (a large secondary market) during COVID and refuse to go back to their (mostly NYC-based) firms. Is this churn happening at other firms too?

Anybody else feel a little sentimental when they realize their toddler has lost their baby memories? For instance, tonight my 3 year old chose a bedtime book that we haven't read in a really long time (maybe 9 months, at least). We used to read this book all the time and he loved it. Tonight, I realized it was like I was reading it to him for the first time. I know we're forming so many great, new memories; but, it made me feel a little sad that some of our beautiful old memories will be lost.
