I’ve been overlooked for promotion in spite of deserving it. I’m now starting my journey to look for another job. Likely to go another B4 or consulting route. Any lessons learned or recommendations at the start of this process? Also, advice on preparing for the jump (e.g., preparing your laptop, cash out AMEX pts, switch email accounts on websites, etc.)? Thanks!

Do it sooner than later. Make sure your resume looks good and highlights your experience. Make sure to have a concise and compelling story as to why you're switching firms. "I'm not being appreciated" or "I was passed up for promo" are probably not the things an interviewer will want to hear. In my case I was switching service lines so I centered my story around that. Also make sure you have handy 2 to 3 good reasons why you want to work for the firm you're interviewing with.

What do you do?

Do you understand what your development points are and why you’re not getting promoted? Seems like a red flag for big 4 unless you thought you deserved early promo that will definitely be asked in other big 4 interviews.

Reach out directly through LinkedIn or otherwise to partners/directors/etc in the practice you’re interested in. Sometimes promotions don’t happen because of business reasons and have little to do with whether you’re qualified.

Correct. Mine was a business reason and wasn’t that I was unqualified.
