I’ve been prepping myself to ask for a raise. My annual review (I’ve been at the company just about a year) is happening by the end of March. Should I bring up my request now or should I ask at the review itself? Since I haven’t been at the company long, I have no idea if there’s buckets, or if they will give decent raises this year due to inflation. My request will mostly be based my workload being switched to a much heavier area 2 months after hire (almost 2x the work).
Bring it up now! Start the convo. In my experience, the review is too late.
Yep. Also, how’s your relationship with your boss? If it’s friendlier, you could ask him how raises typically happen at this company. That tells him you’re interested and wanting more, and also his reaction (and response) will give you valuable intel on how to proceed.
Definitely now but would plan on more than one conversation. It is much easier to advocate a raise for someone in the midst of negotiations rather than after the money pool has been divided.
Question: how do you start the conversation (while working remotely)? Email? Video call with them?
yikes. that seems off.
i’d advise you find someone you trust (who has some influence) to help champion for you. i’m not sure where you work but typically these conversations happen in small group settings (team leads or managers of some kind), at least to start.
