I’ve been teaching for 10 years and am looking to transition out of the classroom. Anyone out there have suggestions for career fields that appreciate a teacher’s skill set?

Ironically we had a sub in our building who was a retired corrections officer and he was such a kind and gentle soul but let me TELL you kids only goofed around once or heard about what happens when you goof around with him and then they were perfect angles!

You can offer freelance services, take a more managerial role in any educational institute or become a consultant.

I did 5 years as a trainer in a corporate setting (designing materials/curriculum, training new hires, communicating with all departments re: employee needs, arranging and running professional development in the workplace, etc.). It was a pretty good gig. I'd be happy to go back to that kind of work if I left public education.

Any suggestions for places to look into? Should I look into jobs as a Corporate Trainer? Any idea what the starting salary and benefits are like?

I am retiring THIS YEAR (2 weeks to go!) , and I am hoping to start a new career as a dog trainer. I love dogs, have raise all of my own to be very well behaved, people I know frequently ask me for advice with their own, and I've spent hundreds of hours watching dog training videos- because it's fun for me. And whenever there's a poorly behaved dog, it's usually because the owner is doing something wrong.... since I'm good with dogs AND people, I should be able to teach the humans what they should do differently.

Depends on your skill set and interests. Think about what field you would like to work in, look at positions within that field, and then what skills you have that would fit.

Remedial positions are great. Small groups but still working with kids.

Well you could transition into school administration but they don’t have any appreciation for teachers sill sets either 🤣

My daughter just attended a new teacher workshop at a ROE. A Superintendent presented (not hers) and told this room full of new teachers, “Real teachers get to school at 7:00 am and go home at 8:00 pm.” Really?? As a veteran teacher of 26 years, I was appalled! Makes sense why new teachers are leaving the classroom in their first five years and why we have a teacher shortage in Illinois with those type of expectations.

He is struggling with the students not having a lot of supplies at home and how to have them create multiple day art pieces. he teaches at a low income area, how is everyone handling supplies to students?

To all the new teachers out there- the most important thing you can learn is classroom management. I’m working with someone who doesn’t quite get it. Often lessons devolve into chaos. It seems to be as long as the kids are enjoying it - then it’s ok. You also need to learn is to help out - to help set up, help pick up, help in whatever ways are needed. Don’t wait to be asked. Put down the freaking phone and pay attention! Finally, try to learn from your coworkers. You don’t know it all!

I feel like there is an easier way to do this on line learning. Same grade teachers at the same school should be one big group. For example:
One teacher has the discussion or lecture and does the presentation to all classrooms. One teacher mans the computer to answer questions that come in and handles any tech issues. Another teacher grades assignment and takes role and handles the admin part. Wouldn’t this be easier? Teachers could rotate or just stay in one role.

A parent just walked into the school and into my classroom to chew me out while I was working with students. How does this happen? It’s like parents run the place, and don’t even get me started on the security issues here.

Fellow fishbowler, I have a question regarding how to approach the partner about an upcoming resignation of the current post. I got an offer from competitor firm and I am scheduled to start with the new firm at end of the month. EY is paying me the bonus on Aug 26th. Just wonder what's the proper way to notify the partners that I believe I was close to without jeopardizing my receipt of the bonus from the firm. Thanks so much for your guidance!

Apparently some states are wanting teachers to post online all the curriculum materials they are using & their lessons plans. It is for transparency. I have no problem posting all of that online. But it does open up opportunities for our lessons & materials to be scrutinized out of context. I truly believe it’s another way to undermine teachers. It allows people who know nothing about teaching to tell us how to do our job. This all started with CRT phobia.
