Hi all! I am former federal government. I resigned due to lack of opportunities and growth. I am interested in a couple of Apple service roles within Pay, Care and SDS. Also, Amazon PM roles under Music, Live Sports and Brand Protection. However, with to the current economic conditions is it smarter to focus on fed roles versus Tech. I’ve never had a Tech role. I have a BS Mechanical Engineering and MBA. Any advice would be appreciated.

Join some Facebook groups for designers and freelancers and you’ll notice there are a lot of gig referrals from people who are too busy to take them on. Also, freelancers from other disciplines (eg marketing, career coaching, photography) are often looking for designers in the group to work with them. If you’re female, freelancing females NYC is an active group for this kind of thing. If not, just search “freelancers” in your Facebook Groups tab and find some groups to join with at least few thousand members. Then check back regularly and even ask the group the same question you’ve asked here.
The best way to get started is to get yourself out there. Hit LinkedIn hard. Let your network know you’re moving to freelance and reconnect with recruiters (even if you don’t know them).
Freelance becomes much easier once you commit to it
I don’t know if it’s any better but a freelance designer I know gets some jobs off Upwork. They also run social and SEM ads in their area to get a few clients.
Upwork and Fiverr are a race to the bottom. You're competing with people charging 10x less, because their cost of living is 10x less - they can afford it more than we can, by a lot.
Join FB groups for entrepreneurs and there are ALWAYS people looking for designers.
