I've been working for a regional public accounting firm since last Summer. It's a small office and I don't really fit in. The accounting software(s) is also ancient and slow here(circa 2003). I quickly applied for a position at a Big 4 and surprisingly was quickly offered a job.

The training here has been haphazard and even managers barely know how to use the software. My main concern is the awkwardness from leaving after such a short time but the commute is an hour shorter to the big 4 firm.

Don’t feel awkward, gotta do what’s best for you!

I feel like these conversations are easy when the new role is clearly better. It’s big four with a better commute. Any reasonable person will understand that move.

like

If asked, you found an opportunity with a shorter commute, end of story, don't need to go into new employer details, they'll find out on their own.

like

If it weren’t for the software I would think you’re at my old firm. Don’t think too much about awkwardness. You need to do what is best for you. I left my old firm after 1 year to come to RSM, and it has been a really good decision for me. Better team and better overall culture. Leaving was awkward, but I’m happier now.

I recently had an interview with the hiring manager and they did 95% of the talking. It was the weirdest interview I’ve ever had. I didn’t know whether to interrupt and get a question and some comments in or stay quiet and listen. I couldn’t even gauge how it went. Has this happened to you.?
Also on average how many jobs do people typically interview for before they get an offer?

Personally, I like posts like this one a lot because:
- it forces companies to admit, you were never out to “hire the best”
- long-term loyalty to a company is completely overrated
- it’s finally “cool” to have hard skills and focus on being really good at them
