Here’s a useful explanation of why the situation is not kosher https://www.vox.com/platform/amp/policy-and-politics/2019/3/20/18272918/conde-nast-epicurious-employee-freelancer-contractor
Very interetsting read. I'm going to send some of my coworkers who are going through something similar
This happens all the time in the content writing space - there are A LOT of big names in digital publishing whose primary contributors are all "freelance" despite working basically full time for them. It's a grotesque business model, but not illegal I think. Best to find greener pastures
Do you have any sort of employment agreement or contract to refer back to? If not, I believe your employer can technically categorize you as they please. You don't have to be a full time employee to be vital to the success of a company, by the way. Re; taking a pay cut, chances are they're doing that to account for the other taxes and benefits that they'll now be on the hook for. It's a trade off. If you want maximum pay and are ok with no other benefits, then remain as a contractor. If you'd rather the security of being a FTE and everything else that comes with that, then you'll have to take a pay cut. Seems like the ball is in your court.
I still feel like what they have done is illegal, but perhaps I just need to find another job.
The pay cut makes sense because you'll have benefits and PTO to account for
