How long did it take you to land your dream job?
If you like what you do, keep doing it, who knows if what your boss is doing is enhancing your abilities to proclaim yourself for a position higher than what you are doing.
Even at the expense of my work-life balance? It feels a bit wrong to me...
While it's nice to hear that you love your job... and the company culture... I would be remiss if I did not say anything about this: you are not required to work additional hours without pay. If the manager is increasing your duties then it might be a sign that you are doing your job well, but his boss would undoubtedly know about it. If it's taking more of your personal time then you need to have a discussion with your boss (and their boss or HR) about your job responsibilities. You shouldn't put in time you aren't paid for.
Thank you, I think I will try to talk to HR about this
He might not know how long the work is taking you. If you have been there for 2 years, it is pretty reasonable for him to assign more duties to you because you have proven your worth to the company. So it's worth a sit-down conversation with him about the work flow. I've been a manager before and it's impossible to tell how things are going with employees unless they tell management.
He definitely knows since he's the one asking me to stay until later. Is this standard practice to ask people to work longer without compensation?
The only thing I have to say is that you shouldn't work off the clock. You mention not getting extra compensation but if your duties can fit into a regular workday, then you just need to take it on as a challenge. It's illegal to require people to work overtime without pay (except in certain circumstances like commission-only positions)
thank you, I'll make sure that they're not taking advantage of me
The problem with that is that you are measured against your job description and objectives. If you do things that are not there, then on your appraisal nobody will use it in your favor.
Ya… no. If you’re working longer hours for it, you deserve a promotion. Otherwise, he’s likely manipulating you bc he can often get away with it. All the talk about grooming you for something big… that’s very much a junior staff attitude to assume that is true (note: it often isn’t barring some very unique circumstances). Be your own advocate and secure your own future.
