I’ve gained almost 10 lbs in the last two months. I got a Peloton in late Nov and have been riding 4x times per week and I’ve always had a naturally high metabolism (so gaining 10 lbs is crazy for me). No way this is muscle gain right? I can’t fathom how I start working out for the first time since HS, haven’t changed my diet, and I gain 10 lbs over the same time frame. Someone please science me.

Try using MyFitnessPal to track your food and excercise calorie burn. It’s easy to get ravenously or perma-hungry from doing a lot of cycling. You can’t out excercise a bad diet.


Your metabolism can’t change that quickly unless there’s a problem.

Same. It’s all in the quads and calves. Haha. I’m usually top 5% of class and I still maintain weight. It’s gotta be diet


Idk I really haven’t changed my diet. If anything I’ve cut down on alcohol consumption all else equal. Maybe my metabolism changed.

Yea, I doubt it’s muscle gain, Peloton is mostly cardio. Not gonna gain much muscle there. You’re probably weighing yourself incorrectly and a lot of that 10 lbs is water weight.


You should weigh midweek in the morning before water but after your AM release.

Do your legs look bigger? Could be at least 4-5 lbs muscle

Fine - haven’t noticed any issues. I feel in much better shape too but the weight gain is just weird.

An Arboleaf scale would be great for you. Mine gives me info on my muscle mass, body fat %, skeletal muscle, visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, body water %, bone mass, BMR, and more. And you can compare info overtime through graphs to see your changes. It’s been so helpful ever since I started trying to lose my pandemic weight


Gaining that amount of muscle is extremely difficult and a very long process (likely years of heavy weight training, caloric surplus and/or performance enhancing drugs).


Could be a hormonal thing

Lotta things could be going on. I have a close friend that had to cut back on cardio because she was burning more calories, but she was hungrier too and was eating more.

I will also say that I have often noticed significant weight gain in the beginning of work out or exercise before the body adjusts and goes to a net loss.

Lastly, it could be entirely unrelated and a metabolism change, a microbiome change, gut bacteria, etc

Actually pretty common. Lots of people gain weight training for a marathon for instance. No chance of measurable muscle gain unless also lifting while on roids. Extra calories usually the culprit, after all you’ve “earned that extra serving”…

Excess cardio can release some sort of hormone which has the opposite effect of what you’re probably trying to achieve. Add at least 2 push/pull days with heavy-ish weights.

If your clothes aren’t fitting differently and you haven’t worked out since high school, it’s probably muscle. That’s some pretty crazy gains in a few months, but you have two options: muscle or fat. You’d notice 10ths of fat. Muscle weighs more and may have displaced some residual fat.
