I’ve got 60k in cash (just received my year end bonus and my exit package) 200k in 401k and 10k in stock. Long term goal to save 150k down payment for my first home. Any advice for someone recently unemployed on how to make some smart money moves here? I’m moving in with family while I job hunt so rent won’t be an issue.

As much as I hope GME and AMC go to the moon, don’t listen to this advice if you’re currently unemployed and looking to make safe moves.

Keep it in cash until you find a job

Sorry to hear that, I would stay heavy in cash and make sure to stay frugal until you find something.

Additional Posts in FIRE Financial Independence Retire Early

Hi there, I’d really love some advice from you all. In the last year I had to sell our home in Boulder, CO and embark on a new build process on a home in Tampa, FL. It turns out my dad can’t afford to live on his own so we found a home in FL that would have an in law suite. We locked in a rate but it expired and they are unwilling to extend due to the fact the builder is delayed and supply chain issues. Is there a smart way to structure loans now I’m unaware of? I’m super concerned.

Does anyone have one of those Infograph’s that show how to optimally allocate your savings? Something like 401k match > HSA > Roth etc (example, I’m not actually sure what the steps are).

I’d love some help thinking through this. I’m currently renting for $1600 base ($1800 total) and live in the least desirable part of town, and expect it to raise to about $2k/month. I was planning to buy my first property in the city and Airbnb part of it, but it will take me about a year to save up the cash (~$500k starting). Eventual goal is to move more rural but trying to build to FI. I found a property in my ideal dream location for $280k but it needs work, and can’t Airbnb it. Continued
