I've got an interview for a contract that would give me a 60% bump in pay
My current manager asked what they were offering and if there was anything he could do to make things better where I currently am. There is no way they can match the offer, but I'm a little worried about leaving a permanent full time with benefits and vacation time. What's my best move? Ask for 20% and be happy with 10%? Aim higher?

For the record I just barely make living wage as is so it's not going to be massive jumps

Ask them to match the offer you received, that way you at least tried and you never know, they might surprise you.

like

My only issue is I know what the other people in my department are making and they have more qualifications and experience and to match would put me in the same pay grade so I don't want to price myself out

You should definitely ask them to match your offer! If your manager asked you should provide the full context of your new offer. You'll be very surprised what they may might and even exceed the offer you currently have. It's cheaper for companies to retain talent. And, all things are negotiable. You will definitely not price yourself out.

like

Ask for them to meet or beat the offer. They know your pay and know its not a livable wage. I've learned over the years to not allow businesses to make hand over fist money because of my pay.

I agree. If they want to keep you, they can make it happen. Don't just assume they can't pay it! I say go for it.

You have to lookout for yourself first.

"Be selfish to be selfless"

If you are barely making minimum wage and you are getting a 60% bump which could potentially improve living conditions then it is a no brainer to take that job, even if it is a contract job.

What I would do is, whatever extra money you are getting you should put it in a separate bank account and be wise in spending that money.

A couple of months before you contract is getting over see whether there are opportunities to renew the contract further. If not, start looking for other jobs.

While you are looking for other jobs use the special account to help meet your daily life expenses.

Do what is best for you at that instant of time as you do not control the future and not sure what would happen.

I just went through a similar situation. They didn’t quite match the other offer, but they did throw in some other perks that wouldn’t be available with the other company. It’s all a balancing act. That being said, if you were looking at other opportunities do you even want to stay at your current employer? If you’d be paid same as people who have more experience/qualifications, May be your employer is taking advantage of all of you?

Hello. I recently accepted a position as Assistant Nurse Manager at a busy Cancer Center in Brooklyn. Did I accept an unfair offer or should I expect that because of my lack of experience in management? Thanks

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

Hi all. I’m making a career shift from graphic design to project management. I’ve spent the last 3 months interning as a PM at a small (<15 people) marketing agency; reported to our account manager, worked closely with the co-owners; exceeded expectations. I received a full-time offer: head of PM, reporting to one co-owner, on equal footing with my summer supervisor; $40k base. Looking at local industry standards, average sits around $75k base. Can I reasonably negotiate and ask for $60k base?

Looking to get into implementation at paycore. Anyone have any salary or info on it? Would anyone recommend them as a good company to get started in implementation?
