I've heard nightmares about people missing weddings- is this for real? I have a hard time imagining that my firm would prevent me from going to a wedding that was very important to me

I had to work on a research memo the morning of MY WEDDING. I took the day off before my wedding for the bridesmaid luncheon and rehearsal dinner. Partner asked me to supplement an internal research memo on new issues as I was leaving the office on Thursday night to get married on Saturday. When he asked me to do this I reminded him that I was leaving to get married. Partner could care less. As soon as I got back from my honeymoon I actively started looking elsewhere and lateraled to another firm that same year.

That’s fucked. I wouldn’t pick up my phone the moment after I clocked out. Good for you getting out of there.

Honestly if your firm is preventing you from going -- and it isn't just a time management issue on your end -- you really wound up at the wrong place

like

It's a scare tactic. It's just about prioritization -- if it's important enough to you you'll make it work

like

Agreed! Plan for it, make it known that it's important to you, develop relationships with other associates who will cover for you when needed, bring your laptop and a wifi device and you'll be good.

I had a litigation matter blow up two days before a wedding this month. Still managed to make the wedding, but I was working from the hotel room for the rest of the weekend.

Outside of a true client emergency (so I’m talking the usual piss poor planning, management, and leadership skills of a doorknob, of most — not all — law firms), Id give my two weeks.

I missed my college friend’s wedding in my first month of work, at 8pm on a Saturday in the same city I live in. Deals and clients with unreasonable deadlines don’t give a shit about your personal life.

A federal judge took 6 months to rule on a motion to continue trial date- trial was scheduled on the day after my best friends wedding (out of town in a college town and coincided with homecoming). Judge granted continuance the Friday before the trial was supposed to start that Monday. Needless to say- missed the wedding. Total bummer.
