I’ve heard some anecdotal stories about consultants leaving MBB and starting their own consulting LLC catering to PE (either doing diligence or other strategy work) and that it can be quite lucrative. Has anyone in this bowl done it who can share lessons learned, the basic economics, and watch outs? I’m curious about exploring the real details further as the autonomy appeals given my current stage of life.

I did other strategy and operations work for two years. It was lucrative and more rewarding but I started as a one man band and then had a few other 1099 individuals I brought in. I was focused primarily on a singular client and then had some people helping support another. I had to constantly be available so boundaries on WLB were non-existent. When the C-suite client who brought me in ultimately left, that relationship with the customer started to wind down. It can end up being a feast and famine model so if you want to do it long term, working with some agencies is helpful.
