This is bad advice. Ask them for a number first. Then say the highest number you can say without laughing.
No no no. You ask for a number higher than the minimum, then you settle for the minimum.
Example:
“I’d be willing to leave my agency and join yours for $100,000.”
“Would you take $75,000?”
“No, but I could do $90,000.”
“Deal."
☝️...Never throw out the first number if you can avoid. Always ask for the range they are working within. Also remember to evaluate the full package bc money will take you so far but other perks like pto, benefits, cell phone allowances etc. should be part of the conversation
Say the # you’d be happy with and stick to it. Be honest and realistic. And get that paper, player.
@OP what if the number if you give them is the low end of their range? Wouldn't you rather get as much $ as possible if you know what the range is?
even if they give a number first, never give a range. the low number is all they hear
It probably depends on your situation. I moved to a smaller market and their range was below my "minimum”, which I shared with them, and that’s what they ended up giving me.
But if you’re moving from NYC job to NYC job, do what Huge 1 says. 😂
Huge 1 you reminded me of another question, why is it best to have them give a number first? Why not just give the highest number I can say without laughing regardless of knowing their number or not?
Meaning yes, if you say the minimum you'd move for, they'll probably give you the minimum.
Just ask for what u want, no need to play games
I think it’s different w a recruiter who benefits from you getting more versus direct with company. It’s good for a recruiter to know that starting point.
