I've made the decision after 15 years of making other people money in the digital space I'm going to branch out on my own. I've met with a few small businesses so I would be able to hit the ground running. I will be retaining necessary services (legal, accounting, etc) prior to officially accepting clients.

I worked directly with Disney/ESPN on their first mobile efforts so I've been doing this awhile.

What pitfalls might I experience that I wouldn't expect outside the usual?

First of all, grats on the move. It’s an exciting one, and I wish you the best!

Secondly, make sure that for every service you provide you have an established process as a baseline (and document it). Otherwise, negotiation in terms of timelines, associated costs (tools, for example), and pricing will vary too much and add an additional layer of unnecessary stress (both personally, and to the business). Coming from in-house/corporate jobs you already know All that Needs to be done, but make sure you know what all you Can do given your resources (team or lackthereof, tools, and especially time — bandwidth). It can even be frustrating, but you gotta break it down into smaller milestones.

With 15 years of corp experience you might know the rest of the things that might pop up, so that’s all I’ll share for now. Good luck! 💪

Thank you! That's very good advice and work that can be done now in the beginning stages vs catching up.

With that much experience you’ll probably be fine. Do you feel like you’ll have any trouble finding work or will you need to build up a customer base?

A guy who owns several local businesses that do a few million year approaches me about working for him. When I got into details his last digital guy destroyed his search and I'm not even sure what else. I live by three major cities and only the smallest one is showing up in results. He wanted me to clean up the mess and I just decided now is the time to bill him for the work vs being employed and dealing with whatever politics are there. Realized I'm only undertaking this under my name. That will keep me busy for a few months to put out feelers to other companies I spoke to but they didn't want to pay the salary. Also I know enough people in the space who will happily pick up easy work after hours to help me out.

Congratulations and good for you- very exciting. I have gotten many proposals for consultative digital leadership/strategy and know there is a very large need right now for transformation and systems leadership. I have been looking to speak more with others in this field either going out on their own or doing more strategic consultations in our space. I’d love to start a channel of some sort to open the opportunity for more conversations and exchanges.

We definitely think alike. The wheels turned when one agency wanted to switch to only strategy but the employees I met had all been there less than a year. I think meeting with one person who can bring in the team at a reduced cost is a real value add.

Thanks for the comment

Awesome! Best of luck. If you need a full or part time PM/Producer, let me know 🤠

I hope that's the case sooner than later!

I had a failed natural FET in Sep & did a mock transfer 2 weeks ago (HFET). Results came back Receptive. I got my period 2 days after stopping the PIO. RE mentioned I can start embryo transfer this week & did not need to wait for my next cycle. My periods are not always regular, so I like the idea of not waiting for them to start but also nervous if this could impact the embryo transfer as it would not follow the same timeline as that of the mock cycle. Anyone try this approach with success?

Working at small firm for 7 years. They created a new Staff Manager position to supervise and train the support staff in 1 office and other internal operation tasks. They promoted a paralegal into the position. They just asked me to take on the training across all offices because the Staff Manager is doing 50% paralegal work due to turnover. I told them if I were to take on a task of a manager, I should get a promotion and raise to do the task. They did not agree. What do you think?

Hi all,

I am in a bit of a situation.

I have two offers in hand IBM 8.7 WITH 1 LPA

Which one should I join? If you say the second one will there be legal complication if I decline IBM's offer after accepting?

Curios to get some other opinions.. I’m in the midst of an epically terrible onboarding experience as a new employee. I’m starting to feel like I’ve made a terrible decision. Thoughts?

Trello? Jira? Other? Why?

I've gotten a lot of mileage out of Trello. Can go shallow or deep. Can't beat it for ease of use, robust free features, lot's of options from them/3Ps on the paid side. I haven't had a lot of success on data/tracking / reporting sides.

Hi there,

I’m having a hard time convincing agencies that my internship experience at the beginning of my career was more than your average person. I won two awards from PR Daily for campaigns I drove, worked 4 full years of internships at 4 companies. First job after grad I transitioned into being Head of Global Social media for a 10k employee company. Proceeded to freelance after being laid off. But they only want to count my 4 years post college as experience. Any advice?
