That's a fair amount to start with. You can and should sprinkle in single days off here and there, weekends or mental days, etc.
5 weeks in total was standard at pub before we went unlimited.
Digitas had three weeks of PTO standard +9 flex days for everyone. Adds up to almost 5 weeks as well.
I can tell you that at “unlimited” vacation companies, they made the move to save money. When people leave, they don’t have to pay them for unused vacation days. Moreover, they know that studies show that Americans in unlimited vacation companies tend to use less of it than at companies with use-it-or-lose-it policies. These companies typically keep track, and employees who don’t meet expectations but have taken 4 or more weeks are often terminated. So yes, I’d find out what the policy was at your level and take those days and no more in order not to call attention to your interpretation of the policy.
All of the above is true, but I don’t know one person who was fired for taking too many days. You can’t even get a certain number approved at a time. Of course, from a cost/benefit perspective, if someone is on vacation half of the year, they might be on the line. But odds are high other factors are at play. Take the days you need, be responsible with a back up plan and accountable for your work when you return. Take. The. Days.
As long as you are considerate about schedules, important dates, etc, take as much as you want to. No one is going to fire you over using too much time. They will ding you if the business is affected by it though.
I took off 24 days in 4 months at my last job and no one batted an eye. And every other unlimited policy place I’ve been has not cared one bit as long as the work was covered.
Also it’s ridiculous that people are still worried about looking bad for ‘taking too much’ from companies. We all need to shake that off asap!
I’m in Canada, but I get 4 weeks and I take every single second of it.
You might be able to find your company’s old handbook before they went unlimited. It should have the standard days by tenure, use that as your guide for minimum amounts of time off you should be taking.
Europeans reading this like
Hell take more than that. Time off is invaluable and anyone who judges you for taking it, is just insecure about their own ability to perform
If it makes you feel any better I’m 3 months into a new job and I’ve already taken 3 weeks off. And I plan to take another between Christmas and New Years. If they say it’s unlimited I’m going to use it that way.
Australian here. Our days carry over, so we don’t lose them. Nice ay!
Take 10 weeks, that should teach em
just don’t do it all at once lol. a year is a long time, so a week or a couple days here and there, it adds up but it doesn’t seem excessive
And don’t think your management isn’t looking at how much time you take off. I had a team of people who never took more than they were pre-FTO entitled to and someone in sr management actually got their vacation hours and then used it against them.
Five weeks total.
Nope!!! My previous company gave us 4 weeks every year
honestly, with unlimited PTO, Take as much time off as needed. I would say Don’t just leave the work high and dry, have coverage or leave thorough hand off notes so things are covered when you’re off. I don’t think people will even think twice…after you wrap a production etc, take some time off to reset. Plan vacations. We need them!
Not excessive at all. Just make sure you have coverage.
Would do that as 2 full 5 days chunks at diferente times of year then some random days for the other 10.
What is unlimited PTO? Especially the unlimited part. How does that work?
